The National Hurricane Center just released their initial forecasts for the 2024 hurricane season, and it could be a record-breaking one. Researchers at Colorado State University are projecting 11 hurricanes, with 5 of them likely to be major hurricanes this year. Meteorologists are bracing for what could be an "extremely active" hurricane season, closely monitoring a phenomenon that is becoming increasingly frequent - rapid intensification. This occurs when a storm's wind speed escalates by at least 35 miles per hour within a 24-hour period. Several notable storms that have struck Florida, including Hurricanes Irma, Ian, and Idalia, have undergone rapid intensification. Even Hurricane Andrew, which made landfall in South Florida in 1992, experienced rapid intensification. Robbie Berg, Warning Coordination Meteorologist for the National Hurricane Center, emphasized the potential for a Category 5 storm undergoing rapid intensification to approach major metropolitan areas in the United States, the Caribbean, or Central America. He asks a crucial question: Are we prepared for a highly active hurricane season? Our team at FRA are boots on the ground, ready to help and provide consults to any business or resident who needs it. Lead, follow, or get out of the way. The timeless wisdom of the Big Dog summarizes our predicament as the rough beast that is the 2024 hurricane season slouches towards birth. With Atlantic warmth in the lead and a favorable La Nina in the Pacific soon to follow, there is every indication that 2024 will exemplify that Big Dogs attitude. Whether or not coastal residents have to get out of the way remains to be seen, but like the non-athletic leisurewear of '90s dads everywhere, the available sizes for the upcoming hurricane season seem to range from L, at minimum, all the way up to XXXXL. WeatherTiger’s 2024 Hurricane Season outlook for March is large-and-in-charge, calling for roughly twice average hurricane activity this year. The forecast breaks down the all key pre-season forecast factors underpinning these aggressive numbers as we prepare to involuntarily leave the porch and run with the big dogs. Read on for our thoughts on U.S. landfall risks in the potentially wild hurricane season ahead.
