Social Entrepreneurs are some of the hardest working people out there, and their ambition to make the world a better place, whatever that looks like for them, has always inspired me. PA Consulting have partnered with UnLtd for a couple of years now, to run coaching sessions here in Belfast to help local social enterprises put their best foot forward when pitching for funding, submitting awards, building their brand, or whatever challenges they face. Recently we welcomed Nuala and Rokayia from UnLtd back to our offices, alongside four amazing social enterprises, for some bid coaching. Both our volunteers, and the SEs, got so much out of it. All four of our guest entrepreneurs said they were extremely satisfied with the support received from volunteers, were more confident in running their business, and have much more understanding in bid writing than prior to the event. This is a small gesture on the part of PA, but the impact these groups have on the lives of the people they help is immeasurable, supporting those with marginalised identities with their mental and physical health, as well as helping them develop valuable life and career skills. If you're trying to figure out how to use those company allocated volunteering days, events like these are a flipping great way to go about it! My MOM was ANGRY at me for VOLUNTEERING & asked me a question that stopped me in my tracks: ‘Why do you volunteer so much at Hainan Business Chamber (HBC)? What have they given back to you?’ My response? ‘Mom, you carried me for 9 months and gave birth to me. What have I given back to YOU?’ She fell silent. That moment reminded me: legacy isn’t about transactions—it’s about giving without keeping score. What makes the Hainan Business Chamber (HBC) so special to me? 1️⃣ It’s more than business → A deep-rooted legacy of Hainanese entrepreneurs → A strong F&B presence (explains my growing belly!) 2️⃣ It bridges generations → Traditional mindsets meet fresh perspectives → Young leaders learning from seasoned veterans 3️⃣ It fosters genuine connection → The warmth in our networking is unmatched → Cross-industry knowledge sharing that broadens horizons Is this pure altruism? Not entirely. This work aligns with Edenity & who I am: • Legacy-focused • Business-driven • SME-passionate But it’s also deeply rewarding to give back to a community that has given me a sense of belonging. you ask, sneh answers: how to collab with cool people building cool things, especially when don't feel confident, part 1 A lil bee in the between the buzz community posed this question to me, and as a first-time founder whose on a mission to create a space where money and emotions can coexist, I wanted to share tidbits this week of things I’ve learned along the way… 💡 Before reaching out, I iterated until I found my north star. A little bit of background, but I first started as a newsletter about leading with empathy to create a more equitable world. Super broad, but gave me some level of scope. But as I began writing, I realized how many of my thought pieces revolved around my relationship with money. And it clicked. So many people I know carry narratives around money. Why do we say money is logical and rational and common sense, yet money is one of the most emotionally charged topics in the room, alongside politics and religion? Being able to fine-tune my intent really helped me determine who I want to collaborate with, who aligns with the values of the change I’m trying to build in this world. - Folks who believe in gender equity. Women’s rights. Fighting climate change. Speaking up on economic injustice. - Folks who are entrepreneurs. Freelancers. Creators. - Folks who have a money story. Our mission is to create a fairer, more inclusive entrepreneurial landscape across the UK. Building the right networks is an important part of entrepreneurship, and we facilitate conversations between mentors and mentees to provide founders with the support they need at different stages of their entrepreneurial journey. This could be overcoming specific challenges or seeking more general advice. Our network of volunteers is crucial to this branch of our work. Each year, experts generously give their time to support entrepreneurs in our community. During 2022-2023, 91 volunteers gave their time as mentors and coaches for entrepreneurs. So this Volunteers Week, we want to highlight the valuable work of our volunteers, from participating in our end-of-programme Demo Days as friendly Dragons to providing one-on-one support to founders. Last January, Dinesh Singh from topmate.io sent a cold DM on LinkedIn which led to thousands of dollars in consultancies. And I wouldn't have that money if I didn't give a cold DM a chance. The message itself was so-so. A bit too wordy. But one line stuck out in the LinkedIn headline: "Try Topmate.io! I will shave my head if you don't like it" I thought that was funny, and the pitch was just compelling enough to give the platform 5 minutes of my attention. I signed up. And the experience was fantastic. Smooth onboarding, clear pricing, few clicks to set up, non-invasive terms and connections. And I got my first booking very quickly above my regular consultancy rate. From there, the community management has been stellar: "Promote your link and we'll put you on a Times Square Billboard and take a video! Shout out to your mentors and we'll promote it! Donate consultancy time to charity!" In other words: they gave me new ongoing stuff to do that was low lift and high value. We've recently had various chats with Emma Bracegirdle, all round super storyteller and founder of The Saltways. We've been working with her and her team on a series of videos aimed at the founders and entrepreneurs we support through Hatch Enterprise UK, which we're hoping will mean they get to confidently make more videos and stories of their own to share with their respective audiences. Emma was also on one of our business support programmes not too long ago, a partnership we run alongside Southwark Council which supports people in the borough to grow their businesses. We love what she and The Saltways team do and importantly, why they do it. It's important to us that we're able to support people, businesses and social enterprises that aim to and do good in the world, and she's one of the many fantastic people we've met over the past year or so who've really made a lasting impression (for more of these, do have a look at https://bit.ly/3CnTqPz). The vast majority of the people we support at the charity are women or identify as women, and it goes back to that earlier point about supporting good people and businesses.
