Today we launched a bold plan to improve maternity outcomes for Black, Asian, and minority ethnic women and tackle racial inequalities, after a nine-month investigation highlighted disparities in care and experience. The Southwark Maternity Commission, co-chaired by Evelyn Akoto and Professor Dame Donna Kinnair, consulted with over 750 local women, families, and healthcare professionals. The commission's report sets out ten actionable recommendations to address systemic issues in maternity care, ranging from improving workforce conditions to developing a new national way to report maternal health.   Today’s launch event saw colleagues from across maternity services, local government and voluntary groups, come together to show their commitment to improving care for Black and minority women. We were also joined by Florence Eshalomi, MP for Vauxhall and Camberwell Green who voiced her commitment to change. A steering group, including council and NHS partners, will oversee the implementation of the ten recommendations, aiming for improvements in care by 2029.   👉 To read the full recommendations, please visit the Maternity Commission website https://lnkd.in/e7gRzYz4

We were delighted to recognise the amazing people who work on our street cleaning team recently. This event was an opportunity to call out the vital role they play in ensuring our borough is a safe and beautiful place. Each person who received a recognition was nominated by their colleagues for going above and beyond in their contribution to Southwark. James McAsh, Cabinet Member for Clean Air, Streets, and Waste, who presented the certificates says it best: "It was a pleasure to attend the award ceremony this week and to meet the incredible people who work tirelessly to make our borough a better and safer place. Each of the individuals honoured personifies the spirit of Southwark and has gone above and beyond to benefit our community and are amazing ambassadors for our council. Knowing the calibre of people on the team, I look forward to many more events like this." A big thank you to all involved, including: Joel Carré, Matt Clubb, and Toni Ainge. We've taken back control of Peckham Levels following the current operator going into administration.   Since 2017, thousands of people walk through Peckham Levels’ doors every year to shop, eat, drink and enjoy a line-up of live music, comedy and clubbing. To ensure business as usual and to protect jobs, we have appointed The Trampery | Certified B Corp as new managers. Cllr John Batteson, Cabinet Member for Climate Emergency, Jobs and Business, said: "Peckham Levels is a much-loved destination for culture, creativity and affordable workspace. The Trampery’s dynamism and strong track record, especially towards diversity and inclusion, makes them a great fit for Peckham Levels." Charles Armstrong, Founder and CEO of The Trampery, promises: "Our team will work tirelessly to build on the successes of the past seven years and amplify the impact the building creates in the Peckham community.” Read more about what makes them a great fit for Peckham Levels https://lnkd.in/eu9W-FRm Neil Kirby

Are you looking for a different way to market your business in Southwark? A different way to connect with young people in our community? Well, we are offering a sponsorship opportunity like nothing else.   The Children in Care awards are already London’s biggest awards for care-experienced young people and 2024’s ceremony looks like it will be the biggest yet.   Over 150 young people – and their carers - will make their way to the quirky Peckham Levels in Southwark on 1 November, to celebrate inspiring care-experienced children and young people from across our borough. Awards for performing arts, music, co-operation and outstanding achievements will be given out as well as the much coveted ‘care leaver of the year’ award.   Your contribution will help care experienced young people feel special. Sponsoring the Children in Care awards won’t be just another corporate social responsibility box ticked.  It’s a chance to endear your brand to the youth of Southwark – and their carers – in a way that will resonate. Think about it – hundreds of young people – all posting their evenings onto their various social media platforms. Your brand at the forefront. Plus, you are of course free to post your own footage from the awards themselves – and use and edit any content you make at the awards in any which way you choose after the awards have taken place. We will be covering the awards on our official Southwark Council platforms including Instagram, Facebook and our huge residents newsletter, which goes out to 160,000 people.   So exactly what is in it for you? We’ve put together a range of options, to suit different budgets: Package 1 (£2500) Sponsorship on the red carpet backdrop Your logo on the goody bag Opportunity to add sponsored items into the goody bag Award named after your brand Opportunity to hand out an award (subject to DBS checks)   Package 2 (£1500) Sponsorship of red carpet backdrop Your logo on the goody bag   Package 3 (£500) Sponsorship on the red carpet backdrop only   Package 4 (filling our gift bags) We are looking for quality gift donations to fill our goody bags. Let us know if you would like to contribute a product or voucher.   For further information please email CICAwards@southwark.gov.uk or message us directly via LinkedIn.

Good council homes transform lives.   We and more than 100 other local authorities are calling on the government to work with us to #SaveCouncilHousing, and last night we launched a new report setting out our 5 solutions.   A huge thanks to all the MPs, councillors, housing experts, housing organisations, and many more who came to Westminster to stand together and stand up for council housing.   Councillor Kieron Williams, Leader of Southwark Council, said: “This unprecedented coalition of councils – representing every corner of England - is united in our determination to ensure our residents have decent and affordable homes. For families across our country their council home is a foundation - giving them the security needed to put down roots and flourish."   Read more, including the full report here: https://lnkd.in/dcg_3F2i If you would like to explore a career that allows you to benefit others and help the Southwark community, visit our website today: https://lnkd.in/ewFg_mSH
