Governor Gavin Newsom officially declared May 2024 "Older Californians Month"! This proclamation recognizes the invaluable contributions of California's nearly nine million older residents who enrich our communities with their diverse experiences and cultures. By 2030, one in four Californians will be 60 or older, highlighting the significance of this demographic in our state. This proclamation aligns closely with WelbeHealth's mission to serve vulnerable seniors and create a more inclusive and supportive environment for older adults and their caregivers. As we continue our efforts to provide high-quality care and support for our seniors, this serves as a reminder of the importance of fostering connections and combating loneliness and isolation among older adults. Let's celebrate the older adults in our lives and communities this month and beyond, recognizing their contributions and working towards a more vibrant and equitable community for our seniors! #OlderAmericansMonth #WelbeHealth #CaliforniaCommunity #InclusionAndSupport #seniorhealthcare https://lnkd.in/g3kvVa4w

This article is eye opening to how many people will eventually need more care and support. This holiday remember those who could benefit from more supportive communities. It starts with a simple conversation to see how they are doing at home and chat about what possible options could be available to them to help support them as they age. A backup plan should always be ready at any point a life changing event could happen. If a loved one slipped on ice and couldn’t go home. What’s the plan for them? Do you know what that plan is for your parents? Grandparents? Elderly neighbor? Think about those around you this holiday who could use that next step. Caring Transitions is a great way to start this process with downsizing to prepare for that next lifestyle change. So there is a plan for which items are most important to bring to the new community with your loved ones guidance from choosing these pieces ahead of time. Reach out to me if you would like to learn more of what CT can assist with! Happy Holidays!

What they're saying: "The cost of daily assistance at home is out of reach for most," Scheckler said, "and so is assisted living, which bundles housing and care together." Zoom out: The issue isn't specific to San Francisco. Nationwide, 87% of adults 75 and older in U.S. metro areas living alone cannot afford assisted living without diving into assets, per the center. Jeanette Leardi makes an excellent point, one that has become increasingly apparent to me as I delve deeper into the challenges that older persons with disabilities confront at the intersection of #ageism and #ableism. It is certainly true that environmental conditions challenges some, but not all (as the article implies), older persons. However, this is a problem not just for older persons, but for many other members of our society of all ages. Imagine is we rephrase the opening words of the article as follows: "For many of us, leaving our homes and navigating the outside world doesn’t require much effort. But for persons living with disabilities, our towns and cities are filled with obstacles — stairs, unsafe sidewalks and crossings, inadequate lighting. On top of that, most American cities lack robust public transportation. These challenges combine to keep many Americans living with disabilities at home, isolated from social and cultural activities, from essential medical care, from the world around them." As you read this section of The New York Times series, ask yourself: Are old people the only ones with such problems? What about younger people with a temporary or chronic disability? How about an adult with a baby and a toddler in tow? Or someone carrying several bags of groceries? Or someone walking during a strong rainstorm or blizzard? While older adults are the focus of this series, let's be careful to not "otherize" them by considering them a separate, pathetic, needy population. People of all ages need help from others in order to function in the world. We're all in this together.

The theme of this year's Older Americans Month is 'Powered by Connection'. Social connection is incredibly important for all of us and especially crucial for seniors. While connectedness has been shown to affect health and wellbeing, many issues such as decreased mobility, difficulty hearing, and a shrinking social network can lead seniors to become isolated. Local senior centers offer numerous programs and services to engage seniors. Many seniors find that transitioning to an independent or assisted living community provides the connection they need.
