Interested in driving positive climate and health outcomes in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs)? We're funding research on how climate mitigation interventions affect health in LMICs. These countries are making decisions in key sectors today that could lock-in high emissions and overlook potential health benefits in the future. But there's a significant gap in understanding how mitigation strategies affect health in LMICs. This lack of evidence makes it challenging to take action to protect health. Transdisciplinary teams are essential to bridging this gap. Learn more about the funding and apply by 18 February 2025 ⤵️ https://lnkd.in/eF2dtSXK

Low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) have historically contributed the least to the climate crisis but are feeling its worst impacts. High-income countries must act faster to cut carbon emissions. LMICs also need to transition to greener economies and avoid making decisions today that could lock in high emissions and poor health into the future. However, there's a significant gap in understanding how mitigation strategies affect health in LMICs. This lack of evidence makes it challenging to take action to protect health. 📉 Transdisciplinary teams are essential to bridging this gap. Local collaborations between researchers and policymakers ensure that research reflects the specific health, economic and social priorities of an area. This collaborative approach ensures solutions are tailored to meet a community's needs. Are you: ✅ part of a diverse team with academic and non-academic stakeholders ✅ located in a low- or middle-income country ✅ looking to research the health effects of climate mitigation? If you answered yes to all of the above, we have a funding opportunity for you. Learn more at our webinar on 6 December at 10.30 GMT ⤵️ https://lnkd.in/eF2dtSXK

I am excited to have been selected to be part of the The Academy of Medical Sciences and National Academy of Medicine Next Generation Researchers: Exploring Climate and Health project. 🌍 We know that climate change is the biggest global health threat of the 21st century. ⚕ We know that health systems (including health research) have a considerable impact on the environment and climate - contributing 5% of global greenhouse gas emissions. This project brings together emerging leaders in the UK and US to tackle urgent and complex issues at the intersection of climate change and health. The aim will be to propose policy actions that the health research sector could take to address the challenges of climate change. I am honoured to join a cohort of innovative thinkers and dedicated professionals who are passionate about driving positive change! 🤝 Key Recommendation: Foster Greater Cross-Sectoral Learning & Collaboration 🤝 Integrating climate resilience strategies into health systems is paramount, necessitating investments in health infrastructure and fostering cross-sector collaboration. There's a growing need to engage new stakeholders in integrating NTD elimination and climate action at local, national, and global levels. An interdisciplinary approach is vital to collaborate across sectors and maximize the co-benefits of climate action, NTD elimination, and Universal Health Coverage (#UHC). It is really difficult and technically demanding to understand the impacts of society on the #environment. #Globalisation means that local behaviours have global consequences. #PlanetaryHealthCheck is an amazing resource that summarises global environmental impacts in different environmental domains and presents news from that is not otherwise broadcast. "The planet is changing faster than we had expected. We are, despite years of raising the alarm, now seeing that the planet is actually in a situation where we underestimated risks. Abrupt changes are occuring in a way that is way beyond the realistic expectations in science." #Planetaryboundaries #Sustainability https://lnkd.in/eB-8ANDD

The team is thrilled to announce our recent publication in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health! Our research delved into climate change adaptation interventions for health through a comprehensive scoping review. Here are the key insights from our analysis of 37 studies: - The majority of interventions concentrated on addressing heat exposure and fostering behavioural change. - There are notable research gaps concerning vulnerable populations. - Climate-health research in the Global South is notably underrepresented. - Encouraging outcomes were observed for interventions such as early warning systems and workplace cooling strategies. The overarching message is evident: while strides have been made in safeguarding health against climate-related challenges, there is a pressing need for more implementation research and a heightened emphasis on equity. It has been fantastic to collaborate with colleagues from esteemed institutions like the University of the Witwatersrand, the University of Graz, the University of Oslo, and others on this crucial endeavour. #ClimateChange #GlobalHealth #PublicHealth #Research #ClimateAction

Key Recommendation from the END Fund perspectives paper: Build Evidence to Drive Investments: To effectively allocate resources and design resilient health systems, we need a robust research agenda. Increased investment in generating evidence linking climate and specific Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) is crucial. This investment should integrate the research agenda into core initiatives of climate action and NTD elimination. Policymakers require additional evidence to inform national action planning approaches for climate adaptation or mitigation strategies impacting health systems. On the basis of information about the upcoming Horizon Europe 2025 call for proposals, the European Commission has proposed a budget of around €970 million for health research—yet, alarmingly, no funds are allocated to research on the effects of climate change on health. This needs to change. The SPHERA consortium, gathering Europe’s leading institutions in environmental, climate, and health research, calls for an urgent re-evaluation of this funding gap. We urge the inclusion of dedicated research topics focused on the health impacts of climate change, aligning with the priorities set out in the 2020 HERA report.
