Tell your customers “NO” (politely)…. What I am about to say should be obvious…but it never ceases to amaze me how many misguided decisions are made in the sports nutriton industry. I see them continuously, even from teams that should know better based on their number of trips to the plate. I see these missteps mostly in the FDM channel (most of the specialty category managers are pretty plugged into flavor, ingredient, influencer trends). If you own a brand, or are a senior-level sales manager in a sports nutrition brand, here’s a little advice that can not only preserve your current status of employment, but gain you the unwavering respect from some of the most influential category managers in the world. 1) Most category managers in the FDM channel expect YOU to know what’s best for them. To that end, understand that many of these managers are investing trust in you and expecting you to steer them in the right direction, clear of any bear traps or pitfalls that you’ve already probably encountered. Remember, there is nothing that is more costly from a financial or relational perspective than getting a item that you “endorsed” thrown out of a national planogram. 2) Suggest products as if your job depends on it (because whether you agree with this or not, IT DOES). I have seen products in grocery sets that wouldn’t sell in the most hardcore sports nutrition store to the most knowledgeable consumer. 3) Know your customer’s customers. And if you don’t know who they are, consider this Rounders gem “if you can’t spot the sucker in your first half hour, then you are the sucker.” 4) Finally, any company worth its salt will reward its teams based on their “long play” product placement strategy. A quick sale will soon be forgotten (as will the person who sold it) faster than the scan-down, or rollback, hits the company’s P&L. This is a GREAT time to be selling sports nutrition. So many new retail opportunities that didnt exist ten years ago (FDM and convenience category managers are warming up to not just creating new space but expanding sets equivalent to the size of most specialty stores). If you own, or work for, a brand that has this new audience, don’t screw it up by not doing the work first. Crush it.
