I am thrilled to share that we have secured a $5 million grant from CalOptima Health for the project titled NURSE-OC: University of California, Irvine Nursing Workforce Pipeline through Externships and Residencies in Orange County (OC)! 🎉 This grant significantly addresses the OC nurse workforce shortage by recruiting and training prelicensure RN students, Family Nurse Practitioners (FNP), and Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners (PMHNP) graduates as externs/residents on a newly crafted NURSE-OC curriculum. Additionally, this program will launch annual career events for all nursing students to connect with OC providers and create a “NURSE-OC-Community” for nursing externs, residents, and alumni to share experiences and achievements, fostering a strong commitment to working in OC. This program will also enhance our capacity to add more admission slots potentially. This achievement was the result of a focused and collaborative effort between Dean Mark Lazenby and me, taking just 2.5 weeks of diligent work. We dedicated 6 hours daily, strictly during business hours from Monday to Friday, with no after-hours or weekend work. The process was incredibly rewarding—brainstorming ideas and writing the grant together was a delightful experience, free from the usual stress and pressure. Having been in this field for almost two decades, I have often struggled with last-minute pressures and extended hours. This project was refreshing, showcasing the power of organized, efficient teamwork. I am fortunate to work with a dean who understands the significance of work while also emphasizing the importance of work-life balance. This kind of leadership fosters a positive organizational culture, promoting well-being and enhancing both workplace experience and mental health for everyone involved. A special shoutout to Susanne Phillips, DNP, APRN, FNP-BC, FAANP, FAAN for providing invaluable ideas on the clinical side. Her insights were crucial to our success. This positive experience has inspired me to consider launching a pilot program to work closely with faculty, helping them turn their innovative ideas into funded research. Gotta love small, innovative programs that help retain nurses within your community - especially when it comes to developing the skills listed here "Designed using Benner’s Novice to Expert Model, the program focuses on supporting newly-graduated nurses as they transition from student to professional practice. The curriculum was designed to assist new nurses in overcoming transitional hurdles that are most common during their first year of practice, with a focus on prioritization, communication, #leadership, critical thinking, professional development, and evidence-based practice." I cannot think of a better 30 minutes to learn about XR in nursing education than Dr. Cait Yeager on #ExploreXR. She is incredibly succinct and entertaining as she summarizes use of XR at Ursuline College. We get asked many questions by customers and prospects alike: ❓How do we use XR in our curriculum? ❓What is the value relative to traditional, analog methods? ❓How do students react? ❓What is the value of MR vs VR? ❓Does XR scale? ❓Is XR economically advantageous? Dr. Yeager answers all of these and more! She and her colleagues have done an incredible job of implementing XR that we can all learn from. Highly suggest you give it a listen.

Exciting news! I have returned to school to complete my MSN-FNP program at age 53 😊. However, I am currently facing a challenge finding preceptors for all my clinical rotations. This is a common issue for many NP students who are required to pay thousands of dollars per semester to their preceptors or organizations that link them. Sadly, this prevents some students from completing their degree for years or giving up entirely. Therefore, I am reaching out to anyone who is an MD, DO, FNP, Women's Health, Pediatric, or other NP in Illinois, Wisconsin, or California, and available for preceptorships starting this May. Even if you cannot help me personally but are a potential preceptor located anywhere, please consider putting yourself on the list of potential NP preceptors at your local nursing college. The world needs more nurse practitioners, and it is not fair that nurses have to pay to practice, when MD rotations are a part of the physician program. I am sure that all MSN-NP and DNP students will be highly appreciative of the help from those who have gone before us. Let's help each other achieve our goals and make a difference in healthcare! The Four Primary Roles of the Preceptor Which kind of preceptor are you? The preceptor plays a unique role in the personal and professional development of novice nurses, but there are 4 primary roles that create successful preceptor relationships: role model (influencer), socializer, coach (educator), and protector. Roles of the Preceptor 💫 The role model 🦹🏻♀️or influencer demonstrates safe nursing practice and encourages the novice nurse to do the same by influence and accountability. The socializer 🤝 assists with integration of the novice nurse within the unit and organization through introductions and discussions about the expectations of the role. The coach or educator 🎓acknowledges learning needs and identifies experiences to support learning progression. The protector 🔐creates a safe learning environment while protecting the patient.
