Though I’m not licensed in these states, I took a quick look at the job posting. $70K for a full-time therapist position. It explicitly states full licensure required and must be available 40 hours per week. If you’re interested in this job, I would highly recommend asking about how much time you’ll be providing direct therapy services throughout your 40 hours of availability. Since it’s salary, you probably want to know what that expectation looks like. Also, determine if it’s weekend/evening requirements, a typical 8-5 job, or there’s flexibility in creating your schedule. For fun, I looked at the corporate openings: Operations Associate II, Clinical Expansion 2 years experience and no clinical requirements Salary range: 68K - 104K Both of these jobs are fully remote and offer all the additional compensation packages of healthcare, timeoff, private stock equity, etc. Why are therapists, the ones doing the actual work with a bachelors degree, master’s degree, and at least two-three years of experience to gain full licensure (approx 9 years worth of time, money, effort, education, experience) being compensated at lower rates? Because we’re willing to accept it.

On the eve of my next stage of treatment, I am forever reminded the need to be grateful to my medical team. My medical team does not limit itself to the doctors and nurses who took care of me during my worst stage, but equally the allied health members such as the social workers, psychologists, and now the radiation therapists who I will be visiting next. I am forever reminded that these extraordinary men and women in the health care industry are more then just professions, they are superheroes. Superheroes that deserve every ounce of respect and salutation possible. I wouldn’t be where I am today without their ongoing care and support. As I reflect writing this, I ask: how can we make healthcare education more exciting? What strategies can we use to invite people from low SES backgrounds in particular into health care and go for the positions that stereotypically are earned by people with a family line of professionals. Talent shouldn’t be defined by where you live and your social status. Everyone has a talent that is capable of changing the world. Once I am through this, I endeavour to help people discover their professional talent. I want people from low SES backgrounds in particular to realise they can become the next doctor, lawyer and even commercial pilot! Everyone should have the access to achieving a dream. Hard work is a part of it, but your own status as a person and where you come from shouldn’t be an impeding factor that stops you from realising that vision. October is Health Literacy Month. Health literacy is a person's ability to make informed decisions about their health care through researching, understanding, and using information. As a future clinician, spreading awareness about health literacy is extremely near and dear to my heart. Steps I currently take as an occupational therapy student: 1. I never assume people know what occupational therapy is.  2. I help patients get services in the language they are most comfortable with at the OT/PT Pro Bono Clinic at A.T. Still University  3. I practice speaking and leading sessions in everyday terminology.  4. I create an open environment where patients feel comfortable to ask questions.  5. I ask patients to repeat their understanding of their homework, condition, etc. How do you stay proactive with health literacy in yourself or your patients?
