Decarbonising Britain is crucial for combating climate change and ensuring a sustainable future, but balancing the interests of various stakeholders—from environmental advocates to local communities wary of new developments—makes this a complex endeavour. Do we, as individuals, need to adjust our expectations and consider what we should be willing to compromise on to achieve these vital goals?

The Labour Party's pledges on Great British Energy and 2030 grid decarbonisation reflect a commitment to green leadership that clearly resonates with the public - regardless of whether one thinks they go far enough or not. Polls consistently show strong support for visionary green policies. It's about more than reducing carbon footprints - voters want the country to seize economic opportunities in the green industrial revolution. Government scaremongering about energy security undermines confidence and stifles our innovation. The UK can lead this global shift. Investing in renewable energy, embracing decarbonisation, and supporting community energy projects can create jobs, drive growth, and ensure a sustainable future. It's time to deliver hope on a national level that filters through tangibly to our local areas. If we want people to buy into net zero - we need them to feel like participants AND beneficiaries.

The UK is committed to achieving net zero by 2050, and a new report by the Committee on Climate Change shows that to meet this target, the government must increase investment in decarbonising the economy by two thirds. At present, the UK is investing just one third of the recommended amount. This is not enough to meet the target and the government must take greater steps to ensure that the necessary investments are being made. There are many areas that need to be addressed to reach net zero. These include energy efficiency, energy storage and renewable energy. The government should focus on supporting the development of clean technology and the deployment of new infrastructure that is needed to make the transition to a low-carbon economy. It is also important to ensure that the necessary investments are being made in the right places. This means that there needs to be strong collaboration between businesses, local authorities and other stakeholders to ensure that the UK is making the most effective investments to reach its net zero goal. The UK has a great opportunity to lead the way in decarbonising our economy, but this will only be possible if we invest adequately in the necessary measures. It is time for the government to step up and ensure that the necessary investments are made to reach our net zero target by 2050. #NetZero #ClimateChange #GreenEconomy

The notion of a 'just energy transition' is most often invoked when talking about jobs. It's used to emphasise the adverse impacts on workers as polluting industries are wound down, and to advocate for pathways to 'clean' employment - or at a minimum, for practical measures to cushion the blow. But a genuinely just energy transition needs to be much bigger than that. It's about the epochal challenge of shifting our societies to something less planet-wrecking without simply channelling the rewards to the usual suspects, reproducing and reinforcing all the injustice and turbulence of our current moment.
