Don't miss this exciting conversation with Michelle Khare, Christian Oestlien, and Rene Ritchie as they explore how YouTube is shaping the future of television. Creators love YouTube because they can tell stories without limitations. No more pitching ideas to "a room of suits" or conforming to rigid formats. Instead, creators can experiment, connect with their audience directly, and build thriving communities around their content. And viewers love YouTube because they can find anything — from Shorts to creator-led documentaries or modern-day shows. The creativity of creators is the backbone of YouTube and what makes YouTube such an awesome entertainment option on TV. #YouTube #CreatorEconomy #YouTubeonTV https://lnkd.in/gQW68Tap

As usual, this is a very thought provoking piece by Maisie McCabe on whether the decline of #television is maybe more inevitable than we think. However, I do wonder whether an alternative explanation is that many of television’s problems may be self-inflicted and whether the rush to adopt a mindset of “managed decline” is exacerbating the problems. Take #Channel4, which has been the most aggressive of the UK broadcasters in pushing the digital first strategy. It has also, arguably, been the most impacted in terms of its advertising performance. #Sky, which has arguably been more positive on the resilience of the model, has seen a better performance. There are, of course, many reasons why this may be the case and no one is denying TV’s issues. But I fear that the actions of managements - often on the advice of consultants - have unwittingly caused the problems they fear. A digital-first and a rush to #YouTube strategy sounds great, if you want to - ahem - ‘get down with the kids’ but might not be the best approach. There is also a more fundamental problem namely decisions can be easy to take but hard to reverse if the original analysis on which they were taken proves to be wrong or exaggerated. Part of that is due to some actions are permanent in nature (eg job cuts), part because managements do not like to admit they are wrong. My own view is that (1) there should be more public examination of previous forecasts to see how wrong they were and (2) managements should not lock themselves into fundamental changes that can’t be reversed if the original forecasting proves wrong. As usual, this is not investment advice. Gideon Spanier https://lnkd.in/e3gkJ_g7
