Over the course of my career in retail store operations, field leadership, and learning and development, I’ve been able to travel to many different places for work, leaving just three states in the U.S. that I had yet to visit: Alaska, Iowa, and New Mexico. My trip in July not only checked off one of those states, Alaska, but it also added another area of North America I’ve yet to explore: British Columbia. As a self-confessed foodie, I always seek out great restaurants when traveling and, if possible, the opportunity to meet the chef while I enjoy their food. While in Vancouver, we enjoyed a spectacular experience at celebrated restaurant Viji’s Bib Gourmand. During our time at the restaurant, we met and talked with Chef Vikram’s entire staff. He explained that it was important to him that we met all of them because everyone contributes to the success of the customer experience. They were all highly engaged and authentic; nothing was for show. Having spent a large part of my life and career developing leadership training to create this type of culture in retail organizations, it made a huge impression on me. I was struck by how humble and appreciative he was for his restaurant team and where he is today. One sign of just how powerful his restaurant’s culture is: Most of his team have worked with him for over 20 years! The parallels to retail are evident: Treat your team well, empower them with skills and confidence, and instill in them a sense of ownership and pride, and they will ensure your customers are well taken care of. It’s the employee-customer profit service chain that I have followed my entire career. When you engage and empower people, they will deliver their best work for your customers. As a multiple restaurant operator, want to know what builds respect and loyalty among your employees more than anything else? Seeing an above store leader who’s willing to jump in and get their hands dirty. 💯 ✅ Make it a point to be hands-on at some point during your restaurant visit. I’ve done everything from taking out the trash, helping with orders, sweeping the parking lot, or even dealing with a stopped-up toilet… 💪 I showed my team that no job was beneath me. It may not be glamorous, but it’s about leading by example. This obviously wasn’t the focus of my day, as I always had a strategic plan that I wanted to accomplish during my visit. 👆The number one focus should always be to work with the manager in charge of the shift and strengthen their leadership and operations capabilities. However, authentic leadership isn't just about making strategic decisions. It’s also about getting involved and demonstrating that you understand and respect the hard work your employees put in every day. When your team sees you willing to work, they know you genuinely care about their challenges and successes. I still have past employees approach me and say things like, “I will always remember that time you showed up in really nice dress clothes, and then you dug through the dumpster to break down boxes.” 📦 (Keep an extra set of clothes in your car trunk just in case 😉) Just make sure you use the opportunity as a coaching moment: 🔹 If I’m having to sweep the parking lot, probably means someone missed addressing before I got there. 🔹 If I’m breaking down boxes, I’m going to coach on the costs of them not being broken down. 🔹 If I’m helping on the line, I’m going to coach about service times and how they can positively affect sales. Leading by example fosters a culture of trust, respect, and unity, which is the foundation of any successful multi-location restaurant operation. McDonald's promotes new Chief Supply Chain Officer 👏 The global fast food chain has promoted Cesar Pina to the role of Senior Vice President and Chief Supply Chain Officer for North America, effective October 1st. Piña, currently serving as Vice President of Global Supply Chain, has been with the company for almost a decade and will now be tasked with improving the resiliency of its supply chain by partnering with suppliers, employees and franchise owners. He will replace Bob Stewart, who recently announced his retirement, following an impressive 30 years with the business. Marion Gross, EVP & Global Chief Supply Chain Officer, commented: "Cesar has made significant contributions across his 10-year McDonald’s career to drive meaningful change to our global supply chain and the System at large, and there is no doubt that he is the right leader to carry forward McDonald’s priorities." Piña added: "At this moment in time of rapid change, balancing the needs of today with the expectation to drive long-term positive results means there has never been a more important time to prioritize business resiliency."
