Have you ever wondered about the origins of this meaningful day? The inception of World NGO Day dates back to the significant 2009 United Nations DPI/NGO Conference held in Melbourne, Australia. In this forum, NGOs' critical role in sculpting global policies and forwarding societal progress was brought to the forefront, leading to a day dedicated to honouring these organisations. As time progressed, World NGO Day became a cherished yearly tradition, highlighting the crucial roles NGOs play in societal development. These organisations are at the forefront of addressing pivotal issues such as poverty alleviation, educational advancement, healthcare, human rights advocacy, and environmental protection. Their work gives a voice to the underrepresented, drives transformative changes, and ensures accountability from governments and corporations. They work tirelessly to make a positive difference in our Communities. They provide essential aid, like Food and Medicine, to communities in crisis. They also stand up for important causes like Education, Equality, and Environmental protection. Participated at the launch of the Eco System Development Programme for Volunteering in Africa #DENVA by the Togolese National Volunteering Agency and France Volontaires, in Lomé, Togo from 6-8 February, 2024. The programme brought together participants from 12 countries (Benin, Cameroon, Chad, Congo, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Mauritania, Senegal, Togo and France), alongside representatives from #AU and #ECOWASVolunteerProgramme, and other stakeholders. #DENVA aims to foster connections, improve skills, and bolster efforts aimed at promoting volunteering. Panel discussions encompassed themes like #youthengagement #volunteering #professionalintegration #volunteeringmobility; as well as brainstorming sessions focused on establishing the strategic framework for the initiation of #DENVA. Key takeaway: 1. The need for collaborations in promoting #volunteerism 2. Volunteering can be used as a tool for #nationaldevelopment 3. The need for harmonization of #volunteering frameworks through the #AU volunteering platform linkage 4. Showcase the impact of #volunteering to policymakers to advance National volunteering policies 5. Linking #volunteering to #youthemployment

📅 2026 has been declared the International Year of #Volunteers for Sustainable Development by United Nations. 💡Our 3-day training on documentation and storytelling has officially begun for 30 dynamic members. This initiative is designed to empower our members with the skills needed to capture & narrate impactful stories that drive change. Documentation and storytelling serve as vital tools for advocacy, education, and community engagement. NGOs can record their activities, outcomes, and lessons learned, providing a tangible account of their work and its impact. This evidence base is crucial for evaluating the effectiveness of their initiatives, securing funding, and demonstrating accountability to stakeholders. Moreover, storytelling enables NGOs to humanize their work, translating complex issues and abstract data into compelling narratives that resonate with a broad audience. By sharing stories of individuals and communities affected by their work, NGOs can foster emotional connections, raise awareness about pressing issues, and mobilize support for their causes. In an era where information is abundant yet attention is scarce, effective storytelling and documentation can differentiate an NGO, enabling it to stand out in a crowded field. Stories that capture the human experience can galvanize public opinion, influence policy, and inspire action, making them powerful instruments for social change. Growing up I barely know or heard about the SDGs ( sustainable development goals) and this goals is world wide and it affects everyone globally and the environment around us. This international youth day open my eye more about the SDGs which I came to know recently in 2019, three things stood out for me - our Educational sector in Nigeria should be revamp, there should changes to the curriculum in schools and this SDGs be implemented to start creating the awareness needed from childhood. - Advocacy is non negotiable, everyone is mandated to advocate in one area or the other starting from where ever you are then to the local level, we should humanize our stories and leverage on sacial media platforms - Youth must be part of policy making, Leadership in government and volunteering. We must seek to acquire new skills, create the opportunities and initiative we are seeking and Work on the SDGs. As we hold the government of today accountable we must be accountable to ourselves too. We must be intentional and consistent going forward 🙏🏾💪🏽💯 #sdgs #volunteering
