Indonesia is part of the Coral Triangle: an area of the western Pacific Ocean which is home to 76% of the world's known coral species The Coral Bond is a financial mechanism to support the protection and management of coral reefs in Indonesia's MPAs. Last month, key stakeholders met with the IUCN in Jakarta to discuss aligning with the IUCN Green List - a globally recognised standard for effective management of protected areas. https://loom.ly/TydSbgk Many countries eligible for OCEAN grants are striving to protect the world's valuable coral reef ecosystems through similar initiatives. The link between healthy coral reef ecosystems and the wellbeing of costal communities which depend on them is at the core of OCEAN, which is why all our projects aim to alleviate multidimensional poverty.

As environmental practitioners, we play a vital role in safeguarding our planet’s habitats, particularly in a country as ecologically rich as South Africa. With its diverse ecosystems and unique biodiversity, South Africa is home to some of the world’s most precious flora and fauna species. Yesterday, on the 7th of October, the world celebrated World Habitat Day. It allowed us to reflect on our responsibility to ensure that developments, both current and future, are designed with a focus on sustainability. Every project we undertake is an opportunity to protect our natural environment, ensuring that endangered species and delicate ecosystems are not unnecessarily impacted by human activities. South Africa’s biodiversity is a global treasure, and at EMG, we are committed to preserving this heritage. Through thorough environmental impact assessments and careful project management, we work to minimise negative impacts while fostering sustainable development that allows nature and progress to coexist. Let's protect our natural heritage and ensure a future where human development enhances, rather than diminishes, our incredible biodiversity. #sustainabledevelopment #WorldHabitatDay2024 #environmentalprotection #biodiversity #EMG #SouthAfrica #habitatpreservation #endangeredspecies #greendevelopment

🌱 Our port is focused on environmental recuperation On World Environment Day, we underscore our commitment to the preservation and conservation of natural ecosystems. In line with the #UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the 2024 #Unep campaign, whose theme is #RecoveryGeneration, we highlight the importance of land recovery, the combating of desertification, and drought resistance. The Private Natural Heritage Reserve (RPPN), #CaruaraReserve, is an example of environmental recovery. With a seedling nursery dedicated to restinga, one of the most threatened ecosystems in the Atlantic Forest, #PortOfAcu has the largest recovery program for this vegetation in the country. In addition, more than 60% of #Caruara commitments have been achieved, meeting the requirements set out by the environmental agency, INEA, generating knowledge about restinga recovery, which had not been publicized much beforehand. #Caruara also represents a long-term commitment that will leave an important legacy to the planet. We highlight some numbers related to the sustainable services provided and contributions to the promotion of scientific research and development (R&D) by #TeamACU and our partners for a #SustainableFuture. 🌐 For more information about the theme of the UN campaign for World Environment Day in 2024, please visit: https://lnkd.in/ebA765ym 🌐 For more information about #CaruaraReserve, please visit: https://lnkd.in/d76GNTFA #ESG #TheFutureIsAcu #Sustainability

Participants drawn from countries in the Northern Mozambique Channel (NMC) are meeting in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania for a two-day consultation workshop to agree on a common vision for marine spatial planning (MSP) in the Northern Mozambique Channel (NMC) region; to develop practical recommendations for the development of a roadmap for marine spatial planning, MSP in the NMC, review MSP readiness assessment for each NMC countries and review scenarios for the future of the NMC. The workshop co-organized with AU-IBAR, kicked off today with the aim of advancing MSP in the NMC region, sharing experiences and collaborating in conserving the unique marine biodiversity of the NMC region. The Western Indian Ocean (WIO) region is focusing on sustainable blue economy, ocean governance, and marine spatial planning (MSP), guided by AU strategies and agreements like AU Agenda 2063 and AIMS 2050. MSP is crucial for achieving sustainability and equity in coastal and marine sectors, and the WIO regional MSP strategy aims to harmonize national processes and tackle cross-border issues. The Northern Mozambique Channel (NMC) is a key biodiversity area, identified for its potential as a transboundary conservation site. Mangroves, coral reefs, and marine species make the NMC vital for millions of people's livelihoods, but there are challenges like overfishing and illegal practices. Efforts are underway to develop legislation and policies to balance economic opportunities with sustainable development goals. Collaborative work in the region is based on integrated ocean governance principles, ensuring stakeholder engagement and decision-making for the benefit of all. A recent workshop organized by the Nairobi Convention Secretariat and WWF focused on developing a regional MSP vision and roadmap for the NMC region, aligning with existing strategies. This builds on previous decisions made at the Nairobi Convention to promote integrated ocean management in the NMC. #marinespacialplanning #marineconservation
