Today I preached on Micah's ancient vision of just peace--not just the absence of violence and fear, but the presence of livelihoods, shelter, food, and security. Swords into ploughshares. I invited celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights-. Rights are the foundation of justice and peace. Weseek not just the absence of war, but the presence of human rights. Today we remember those who died pursuing human rights, who were murdered for following after the things that make for peace. May they be present in our hearts and in the struggle for rights to be made real. In every war across our globe we need not just ceasefire, although this is a most necessary beginning, but we need the progressive realization of human rights. We need the things that make for peace, that sustain peace. In this pursuit, we have work to do everywhere. This day, known as Juneteenth, marks a pivotal moment in history—emancipation from slavery in the U.S.  Our CEO Fernando Muñiz reflects, “Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. It is a celebration of freedom and a reminder that the moral arc of the universe bends toward justice. Whew, Caroline A. Wanga hitting them high notes we need to hear. The quote she references of Dr. Martin Luther King is, by far, my favorite and it goes like this: "We must rapidly begin the shift from a thing-oriented society to a person-oriented society, when machines and computers, profit motives and property rights, are considered more important than people, the giant triplets of racism, extreme materialism and militarism are incapable of being conquered." As I'm continuing to notice how much materialism, capitalism, greed and frankly just having nice things consumes are very being... I often wonder "What would we do if capitalism went away?" What are we all willing to give up to ensure those without basic needs like clean water, life-saving healthcare, shelter and nourishing food have these things? How would this society behave if the government just decided no one would go without and ERRYBODY is getting a universal basic income? 🤔 QUOTE: "The norm that every abled person receiving cash payments should be seeking a job can also be challenged. First, holding a job is not the only form of work. Taking care of children and elders is work—work that is performed mostly by women without compensation. A basic income is a way of supporting and recognizing that work without intrusive state monitoring and reinforcement of gendered division of labor." https://lnkd.in/g4iDxdxN Anyway, this is just the early morning musings of someone who seriously wonders if this society can literally put their money where their mouth is when it comes to caring for its people.

As we observe Juneteenth, the AAMC recognizes the significance of this day in American history and the importance of reflecting on our collective journey toward equality. June 19 marks the true end of slavery in the United States, a crucial moment when Major General Gordon Granger and Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation. Yet, nearly 160 years later, we continue to strive for the fundamental promise of ‘liberty and justice for all.’ Systemic change requires more than new rules; it demands personal accountability, education, courage, and the willingness to engage in difficult conversations. We must unlearn long-held societal norms and confront the ways historical injustices shape today's inequalities. As Frederick Douglass wisely noted, “The life of the nation is secure only while the nation is honest, truthful, and virtuous.” Let us seize this moment to commit to creating a future where equity and justice are realities for all. #Juneteenth #Equity #AcademicMedicine #SocialJustice
