This World Environment Day, West Fraser is pleased to highlight a collaborative project between our Bemidji OSB mill in Minnesota, and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Last week, the Minnesota DNR stocked Bemidji OSB’s pond with flathead minnows. Later, they will stock the pond with muskellunge (muskie), who will feed on the minnows and then will be transferred to larger lakes in the fall for use in fish rearing. West Fraser is dedicated to maintaining and enhancing the biodiversity of the areas where we operate, a core principle of our sustainable forest management approach. Rijkswaterstaat is placing 3D-printed clay reefs at a riverbank located in Boxmeer to stop riverbank erosion before it turns into a full scale flow slide, and restore the habitat of riverine plants and animals in the Meuse River. 🗨️ “Erosion in this kind of riverbank is a natural process. However, the process can become so serious that it requires intervention," says Esther Stapper, Sustainability Advisor at Combinatie Maaskracht. These 3D clay reefs, developed by Urban Reef, are a complex network of hollows with a rough surface. The hollows in these reefs enable all sorts of river life to nestle in and around them, meaning that they can live in a sheltered environment despite the Meuse’s strong current. This is good for biodiversity, for the ecological water quality and for the riverbank! 👌 ℹ Read more on Dutchwatersector.com: https://lnkd.in/eaZXQ9TC.

Forest management is a planned and sustainable practice that respects the natural regeneration cycles of forests, allowing for the responsible use of resources without compromising the ecosystem. On the other hand, deforestation is the uncontrolled removal of trees, leading to irreversible biodiversity loss. Forest management is essential for balancing economic development with environmental preservation, creating jobs and keeping forests thriving for future generations. Choosing conscious practices like forest management is crucial to ensuring a sustainable future for all of us. 🌳

NATURE BASED SOLUTION FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT. One nature-based solution for sustainable development is the restoration and protection of forests. Forests play a crucial role in mitigating climate change by absorbing and storing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. They also provide a wide range of ecosystem services such as clean air and water, biodiversity conservation, and soil protection. By promoting sustainable forest management practices, implementing reforestation and afforestation projects, and combating deforestation and illegal logging, we can ensure the long-term health and resilience of forests. This not only helps to address climate change but also contributes to the socio-economic development of local communities that depend on forests for their livelihoods. Additionally, nature-based solutions such as green infrastructure, sustainable agriculture practices, and coastal ecosystem restoration can help to address a range of environmental and societal challenges while supporting sustainable development goals. By harnessing the power of nature and working in harmony with the natural world, we can create a more resilient, equitable, and sustainable future for all. Plant a Tree today and save our world. 🙏🥦🌿🌱🍃🥑🍅🍊🥭🥝🍏🍠🍌🌽🍈🍓🌶️🍐🍉🧅🌍

Spotlighting the importance of sustainable forest management, the annual #FSC Forest Week campaign is held globally during the last week of September. It has never been more crucial to raise awareness and inspire responsible actions that positively impact our environment. As the world looks to actively contribute to fighting the climate and biodiversity crises, this campaign steps in at a critical time to show you how to be a part of the solution. At Optichrome, we are proud to take active steps toward protecting our planet's forests and reducing our carbon footprint. This #ForestWeek, we are highlighting our sustainability efforts and commitment to environmental stewardship Climate change is higher on the World's agenda than ever before. So we have implemented a robust framework to measure, monitor and reduce our emissions: from common sense actions to reduce our energy use, to the benefits gained by investing in the latest print technologies. During the year January to December 2023: 💚We offset 67.297 tonnes of CO2 emissions through Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) reduction projects in partnership with our paper supplier Elliott Baxter. 💚We supported the planting of 1,901.44m² of native UK woodland, removing 76,005 kg of Carbon Dioxide, in collaboration with the Woodland Trust, through our supplier, Premier Paper. 💚 We balanced the equivalent of 20,271 kg of Carbon Dioxide, helping the World Land Trust protect 3,872m² of critically threatened tropical forests by using Carbon Balanced Paper. Our work supports FSC® Forest Week to promote sustainable forest management, ensuring we all do our part to protect the world’s forests. Together, we can make a difference.
