According to ChesapeakeProgress, "The pace and scale of forest buffer implementation is inadequate to meet the ambitious goals set in the Chesapeake Bay Watershed Agreement...To fill the gap between 2021 progress and 2025 WIP III goals, over 3,000 miles of forest buffers need to be added annually between 2022 and 2025." One of James River Association's key conservation priorities at this year's General Assembly is seeking funding to support the development and implementation of the James River Buffer Program. Since 2019, this collaboration between JRA, CBF, and the Department of Forestry is responsible for almost 1,100 acres in the Middle and Upper James Watershed. A huge thanks is due to Amy Laufer and Creigh Deeds for championing budget amendments to provide funding to DOF to continue to support this cost-effective program which improves water quality through partnership with private landowners.

We were pleased to welcome Labour MP for Chesterfield, and Shadow Minister for Nature and Rural Affairs, Toby Perkins MP, to our Hexham plant yesterday. 🏭 Stuart Goodall, Chief Executive at Confor: Confederation of Forest Industries (UK), shared an insightful presentation about the state of the forestry industry today. Some great round the table discussions followed with Toby and representatives from WPIF as well as the wider UK forestry sector, about what the government can do to get more trees planted and help achieve the net-zero targets. 🌲 #netzero #plantmoretrees #climatechange

We can’t tackle the nature and climate crisis without trees. 🌳   From individual trees in our towns to agroforestry schemes on farmland, we need a mix of trees and woodlands for nature and for people. Natural England and Forestry Commission are working together to ensure that we deliver tree and woodland cover for wildlife, carbon sequestration and timber resources. Our Chief Executive, Marian Spain, joined the Forestry Commission’s Chief Executive, Richard Stanford, on a visit to Cranborne Estate last Thursday. They reviewed best practice for woodland management and nature recovery and discussed the need for collaboration to address the challenges facing the woodland sector This partnership is one of the ways we are working together to meet the government’s nature recovery targets as set out in the Environmental Improvement Plan. In 2023, Forest Products Association of Canada, Canadian Wood Council, Energy Futures Lab and The Transition Accelerator/ L’Accélérateur de transition convened a group of over fifty participants from Canada’s mass timber value chain representing business, government, research institutions, Indigenous Peoples, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Over a series of workshops, these participants worked together to co-create #TheMassTimberRoadmap. To build a world-class mass timber sector, Canada needs to adopt a strategic approach to the use of its forestry resources to seize an ambitious vision of increasing the mass timber market to $1.2 billion by 2030 and doubling that to $2.4 billion by 2035.
