Cheers to the Environmental Business Council of New England, Inc. and organizers of the 5th Annual PFAS Seminar (06Feb2024), summarizing latest science, regulation, and policy-making in the six New England states. State agencies continue to grapple with public concerns about safe levels of PFAS in drinking water, private wells, and surface waters. Managing biosolids almost certain to contain PFAS remains another vexing issue. During the seminar, keynote speaker Michael Dourson, Ph.D., DABT, FATS, FSRA highlighted the 2+ order of magnitude differences in USEPA's interpretation of PFAS human and animal studies and "safe levels" compared to other countries and international scientific organizations. Unfortunately, USEPA is unlikely to waiver, particularly in an election year. The high costs of regulation, monitoring, treatment, and disposal of PFAS remain very significant obstacles to responding fully to the public's concerns throughout New England.

Similar to CalEnviroScreen, the Environmental Justice Index was never meant to be shelved….it was meant for action. U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) putting Environmental Justice Index maps into action in St. John the Baptist Parish, Louisiana. “Because of the existence of more than 470 chemical manufacturing industries and 80 petroleum and coal products manufacturing industries, the communities in and around the St. John the Baptist Parish rank among the highest in the nation for environmental burden (0.84), which takes into consideration, but is not limited to, proximity to potentially hazardous and toxic sites (See Figure). Furthermore, communities in St. John the Baptist Parish consistently score in the 99th-100th percentile nationwide for air toxics cancer risk. In 2014, the average cancer risk from air toxics for census tracts in St. John the Baptist Parish was 465 per million, more than 15 times the national average.” Full letter here https://lnkd.in/gkPr6Svg

This is a good case study on a great end use for biosolids and other residuals that was almost ended due to unfounded PFAS concerns. See how NEBRA members are addressing those concerns, from our latest newsletter: https://lnkd.in/eJP7uEBu

What happens if you arrive to install a dam cover and find much less water in the dam than anticipated? We journeyed to the WA Wheatbelt town of Merredin and teamed up with the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation for the Merredin Shire. Fitting dam covers on the Merredin No. 4 Dam might have been a challenge, but working hand in hand with the shire led us to finding a solution. Find out how it unfolded: https://bit.ly/3JL4Nli

The current issue of Chesapeake Quarterly (Volume 23, Number 1) highlights some of the work done at Dr. Upal Ghosh's lab on developing Passive Samplers for the forever chemicals, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). I am excited to be a part of this endeavor along with several others in the group. For PFAS, the science is still largely in the diagnosis stage. We look forward to creating impact through our work, in the world of PFAS environmental monitoring, analytical methods to assess their mobility through the ecosystem and risk assessment. Our group received mention in yet another story covered by the current issue: Diagnosing the PFAS Problem (https://lnkd.in/eRnMckuG)
