We want to welcome Jake Fincher to his new role as dean of students at Dishman Hills High School! Jake has worked in education since 2016 with experience as a science teacher. Jake was kind enough to take a few moments to introduce himself by answering a few lighthearted questions. - If I could compete in the Olympics, my sport of choice would be… bird-watching. First, I would need to petition the committee to add that as a sport. - I am inspired by… the resilience and creativity of students and educators. - I beat the summer heat by… spending time on the lake with family and friends. It’s the perfect way to relax, enjoy nature and create lasting memories. - I can’t start my day without… a cup of coffee and a moment of reflection. - In this new position, I am most excited to… contribute to a school culture that promotes personalized learning, fosters a sense of belonging, and supports both students and teachers in their professional and personal growth. #WVSDcelebratesstaff

☀️T-12 Days Until the Unofficial End of Summer. ☀️ Can you believe it? Seems like just the other day kids were graduating, pools were opening, and grills were firing up. ♨️♨️ In the US, Labor Day is referred to as the "unofficial end of summer" as it marks the end of the most summer activities. Many families take one- to two-week vacations now through the end of Labor Day weekend. Why? Because many fall activities, such as school and sports begin around this time. How does this relate to well-being? Well - employees who have kids will, once again, have their routines up ended with school drops offs, after school activities, back to school open houses, PTA meetings, and countless other activities. Pro tip: If you're a leader, now is the time to have conversations with your team to see if they need support, if they're going to have any schedule changes, if they're experiencing any challenges, or just check in to see how they're feeling. For us, it was a few days up at a lake house with family while I played the role of grill master water front. Day Two -- corn on the cob, burgers, and a bunch of sides. Wait till you see what's in store next. #grillmaster #workplacewellbeing #summersout #leadership #culture #backtoschool #wellness

In the words of Indiana Jones, 'It's not the years, honey, it's the mileage.' And that rings true in the professional landscape we navigate. It’s the experiences, challenges, and achievements we amass over time that define our paths. Consider this as you outline your business strategies and professional milestones. Let's drive value with each mile we venture in our careers.

Professional learning should not be delivered--it is not a Fed Ex package.
This new study from EdWeek Market Brief keeps repeating one of my biggest pet peeves in the #professionaldevelopment landscape. In a survey on "in person" and "virtual" #pd, they keep using the verb "delivered" to describe a professional development experience. You can't "deliver" development. It isn't a package. It's an ongoing, iterative process. Anybody who is "delivering" #professionallearning to #schools isn't worth the time or money. It doesn't matter if it's in person or virtual. https://lnkd.in/gc2XVPd2 #schoolleadership #schoolleaders #educationalleadership Sibme

So proud of my friend and brilliant science writer Lynne Peeples! If you’re interested in learning more about the latest scientific thinking around sleep/circadian rhythms and what it means for the way we live today, you’ll want to read this book. I already have my copy!!
I'm thrilled this moment has finally arrived! And I'm filled with gratitude to family and friends, hundreds of sources, my teams at Riverhead Books and Bloomsbury Publishing Plc, and the generous support from The Knight Science Journalism Program at MIT and Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. I look forward to seeing many Seattle peeps tonight at Town Hall Seattle And, if you are in NYC, tune in to WNYC Radio at around 11:30 AM ET to hear me chat THE INNER CLOCK with Brian Lehrer!

UNVEILING A REVOLUTIONARY PERSPECTIVE ON HIGHER EDUCATION "Turns out we're all looking at college the wrong way" from Tulsa King echoes the sentiment that education extends beyond degrees. In a pivotal moment from episode 3, this profound statement underscores your reliability as a potential asset in the workforce. Tulsa King, through a paradigm shift in hiring, challenges the conventional outlook on college. It's no longer confined to the confines of degrees but is a celebration of diverse skills and untapped potential that individuals uniquely possess. As an employer, we've enthusiastically adopted this new viewpoint—a perspective that places value on the distinct qualities and experiences that transcend traditional academic measurements. It's a realization that your alma mater is just one piece of the puzzle; what truly matters are the strengths and perspectives you contribute to the team. Cheers! Yes all things are possible especially if the vision is clear
She wanted to see my office in Illinois State Capitol. She said it was “So cool!” But what I thought was cool was knowing she can have big dreams about what’s possible for her own life. From the Girls Lead program to We Thrive, the future for Illinois girls is bright!
