What does it mean to be a Tribemate at Groundworks? 💪
It means we all put our boots on the same way and embrace the grind. We are not only leaders but innovators in building Groundworks to be North America's industry leader and the employer of choice.
Our Talent Acquisition department has started reading Extreme Ownership to foster a culture where these values thrive. We hold each other accountable to these principles and focus on executing our departmental goals through that lens.
I've been blown away by my team's dedication to executing Extreme Ownership daily. Here is some feedback on their reading of Extreme Ownership thus far.
How do you define effectiveness? Set goals, have a daily routine, stay organized, and communicate clearly.
How do you approach setbacks or challenges? Setbacks are always disappointing and usually frustrating. In life, you often choose how to react to a setback and decide if it is a frustrating halt to progress or a challenge to overcome. This isn't easy, but negativity saps motivation. Stay positive and focused, break down the solution, and prioritize.
What do tough situations require of you? Take ownership of a mistake and immediately offer a solution or promise to devise one if none exists. It's fast-forwarding past assigning blame and overanalyzing what happened.
How are you reflecting on the terms ego and humility? Ego is never good in a team setting. Thinking one person is above another starts unnecessary internal rifts. I prefer to think of everyone as equals, acknowledging that we all have different experiences and talents contributing to our shared goal. The other side of the coin is humility and respecting hierarchy. There will always be people better than us at a given skill and people above us passing down information and assignments. Even Senior Leadership has advisors and the Board! Humility is accepting the chain of command and trusting these experienced individuals to lead us with their assignments, even when we don't understand the "why" behind it.
How do you grow and accept challenges in the department? Accepting challenges and growing go hand in hand. True growth comes when faced with a challenge and doing something uncomfortable. It's important to keep an open mind and realize that failure in the face of a challenge means learning something and being better prepared next time.
We don't just read Extreme Ownership; we work hard to emulate it in Talent Acquisition. We are by no means perfect, and we make mistakes, but we are open to the growing pains necessary to build a great company alongside our Tribemates. We continue to grow, learn, and scrape our knees, but we are passionate about being strategic partners and leaders.
