Ajaokuta Steel is set to provide 400,000 metric tonnes of iron rods for use in road construction. During a press briefing in Abuja, Minister of Steel Development, Shuaibu Audu, announced that Ajaokuta Steel's light section mill will annually supply 400,000 metric tonnes of iron rods for national road construction projects. The initiative, backed by an initial N35 billion capital injection from a private financial institution, aims to support the Ministry of Works' extensive road construction agenda across Nigeria's six geopolitical zones. Audu highlighted collaboration with Minister of Works, David Umahi, with 40,000 metric tonnes earmarked for road construction nationwide. Despite Nigeria's vast road construction plans requiring an estimated 7 million metric tonnes of iron rods over four years, Ajaokuta's capacity represents only a fraction. However, reviving the mill is crucial for reducing Nigeria's reliance on imported steel, with potential economic implications ranging from $2 billion to $5 billion. Reviving Ajaokuta, if fully operational, could meet Nigeria's entire steel demand, currently costing about $4 billion annually in imports.

Sand, used for building and construction projects, is the most mined mineral in the world. Every year, up to 50 billion tonnes of sand and gravel is used globally and the annual international trade in sand reached $2.2 billion in 2021, according to the OEC. Interestingly, based on current and projected use rates, estimates suggest the world could be running out of construction sand over the next 40 years (by 2060). There are already telling signs. For example, to supplement local supplies and support its ongoing construction boom, China has become the world’s largest importer of sand, spending $329 million on sand imports alone in 2021. While the USA and Australia are the world’s biggest sand exporters, African countries like Egypt, Mozambique, Tunisia, and South Africa earn over $150 million yearly from selling sand to customers in China, Italy, Turkey, and the UAE, based on international trade data. However, the export market potential for sand pales in comparison to the local opportunities to supply sand for housing and infrastructure projects across Africa. The African Development Bank estimates that Africa needs to spend up to $170 billion annually on new construction projects to close its massive infrastructure deficit. These projects will require millions of tonnes of sand. Worse still, several countries in sub-Saharan Africa are already in a housing crisis with at least 17 countries having housing deficits of more than 1 million units. Nigeria has the highest deficit (17 million), followed by South Africa (2.5 million), and Kenya (2 million), among others. Building these homes will require thousands of truckloads of sand. While the construction boom in Africa is creating a multi-billion-dollar opportunity for local players in the sand value chain, it is important to consider how the scramble for increasingly scarce sand can cause tensions, conflict, and serious environmental degradation, like already happens in countries like Nigeria and South Africa, among others. Ukraine plans to privatize a strategic enterprise for reconstruction. At the beginning of 2024, the Cabinet of Ministers may put the Kramatorsk cement plant Pushka up for auction, said Pavlo Kachur, president of the Ukrcement association. The company was included in a list of 50 companies that are to be sold as part of the large-scale confiscation of Russian assets. The object is considered very promising, given the future reconstruction and the need for cement. In addition, the Pushka’s infrastructure allows production to begin almost immediately; to operate at full capacity, the equipment needs to be modernized. According to Kachur, the price will be favorable, given that foreigners will not risk buying an enterprise in Kramatorsk. Cement construction growth in Russia continues for more than a year Cement industry development prospects during the next decade are associated with infrastructural construction in the first instance, Darya Martynkina noted MOSCOW, April 15/ Cement consumption growth in Russia continues for thirteen months in a row, Executive Director of the Soyuzcement union of cement producers Darya Martynkina told TASS. "The increase in cement consumption in Russia continues for thirteen months in succession. This figure gained 8% in the first quarter of 2024 against the like period in 2023, from 10,427 thousand metric tons of cement to 11,256 thousand metric tons respectively," she said. Cement industry development prospects during the next decade are associated with infrastructural construction in the first instance, Martynkina noted. "Development of infrastructure in Russia still does not correspond to long-term economic tasks and society needs. For example, the level of road network coverage in our country and the level of transport mobility are insufficient; high-speed motorways are close to none," she said. Huge volumes of cement will also be required for the planned construction of the North Siberian railway, the upgrade of 75 airports by 2030, construction and upgrade of seaports, development of the Eastern Range railway and the M-12 highway planned to be extended to Yekaterinburg in this year and then to Omsk, Novosibirsk, and Vladivostok. Extension of the "Family Mortgage" and maternity capital by 2030, special terms of "Family Mortgage" for small cities, and the program of university campuses creation in Russia are other factors, the expert said.
