Nuclear energy is having a moment. Public and private sector leaders – in the U.S. and internationally – have shown increasing interest in this clean power source in recent years. By way of example, in 2023 Poland announced plans for the development of its first nuclear power plants; plans are underway to repower a previously decommissioned nuclear power plant in Michigan with up to $1.5B in related federal, DOE support; and plans for the deployment of small modular reactors are moving forward on many fronts with encouragement of stakeholders including tech companies and data center owners. Great news out of Tennessee, where the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission has granted a construction permit for a next-generation nuclear reactor which will not be cooled by water, but by a molten salt mixture that captures heat produced by fission. Hopefully this is just the first in what could be a transformative energy policy in the US - "a nuclear renaissance with another wave of enthusiasm for molten salt technology." As governments make strides in nuclear energy technology, as reported by The The Wall Street Journal, it is imperative we secure a domestic pipeline of High-Assay Low-Enriched Uranium (#HALEU), the fuel needed to power these small modular reactors. Reestablishing the United States’ status as a leading provider of #NuclearEnergy will require support for the creation of a domestic fuel supply, promoting energy security and helping to usher in the country’s nuclear renaissance. The future of nuclear generation got a major boost today. Microsoft has reached a 20-year off-take agreement with Constellation to re-open the Unit 1 reactor of Three Mile Island to provide around-the-clock clean energy supply to their AI data center operations. Three Mile Island is infamous for the worst incident at a U.S. nuclear power plant in history (full details available here: https://lnkd.in/gr_MJEB4). The partial nuclear meltdown took place at Unit 2, however Unit 1 has remained shuttered since the event in 1979. Constellation has announced this will result in 800 MW of carbon free generation capacity (~ 6,500 GWh annually) and $16B to Pennsylvania's GDP, including 3,400 direct and indirect jobs. Biden administration is now pushing nuclear power as an additional means to get enough electricity to meet the huge demands that everything from A1 to EVs will be making on the nation's electric grid. Since nuclear needs water to cool its plants, the coast is one place where nuclear plants currently exist and more might be placed.
