Last week, I had an amazing opportunity to participate in a work experience programme at Thursfields Solicitors. During this time, I engaged with a diverse group of senior and trainee solicitors. This experience gave me valuable insights into their professional journeys, daily responsibilities, and various legal sectors.
As a law student, my lack of legal work experience has left me uncertain about my career path. I often pondered whether any law firm would offer me an opportunity and felt anxious about interview questions, particularly those related to my commercial awareness. However, my time at Thursfields dispelled these concerns. I encountered several trainee solicitors who had secured training contracts and other legal roles without legal experience. This realisation significantly boosted my confidence and highlighted that legal work experience, while beneficial, is not the sole determinant of success.
The solicitors provided real-world examples of how commercial considerations influence legal strategies and client advice. For instance, we discussed how general elections can impact employment law and the subsequent adjustments solicitors need to make in response. These discussions emphasised that being commercially aware involves not only staying updated on legal developments but also understanding how these developments intersect with and influence broader business realities.
One particularly impactful moment was a conversation with a trainee solicitor Orlagh Finnegan and Leonnie B. a real estate paralegal during a networking lunch. I shared my five years of customer service experience and my concerns about its relevance to a legal career. They reassured me that I possess fundamental skills essential for a solicitor, such as problem-solving, active listening, clear communication, and empathy—pivotal attributes when engaging with clients. This conversation was impactful because it reassured me about the value and transferability of my current skills to the legal profession.
Overall, my time at Thursfields was filled with valuable insights and personal growth, providing an enlightening experience that bolstered my determination to pursue a legal career. I am eager to continue my journey towards becoming a successful solicitor, equipped with renewed confidence and a deeper understanding of the profession.
I want to thank the entire Thursfields Solicitors team for making this experience so valuable and unforgettable. Your dedication and encouragement have had a significant impact on my career goals.
Finally, a huge shoutout to Courtney Litwinko-Smith for putting together an incredibly enlightening week and providing unwavering support every step of the way!
