After 30 years in the radio industry, I've seen radio evolve and prove its resilience as a broadcast medium: 📻 Reliability: Radio is one of the most trusted sources for entertainment, news, and information in America. Radio is often the first place listeners go in times of crisis because of the relationship with the on-air talent. 📻 Relatability: An enduring strength of radio is its ability to resonate with the heartbeat of communities. Radio stations with local segments are uniquely positioned to invite conversations, make listeners feel connected and involved. This local content differs from the globalized nature of many podcasts. 📻 Reality: In its released update for Q4, Edison Research says podcast listening levels remained steady among Americans aged 13 and older. The biggest share of audio listening time though remains with AM/FM radio, which Edison says had a 36% share of listening time during the fourth quarter. #WorldRadioDay #Radio [Radio Ink Magazine] [Edison Research] [NRB Convention]

Are you missing an opportunity to grow your audience using radio? 📻 Long before I started #podcasting I spent many years working full time in radio - as a presenter, producer, and manager. I know how powerful it can be and I remain involved in the industry and continue to explore ideas for stations and shows. While I believe that most if us have a podcast idea that could potentially build an audience, the barrier to entry for radio is higher. But maybe YOU could get there?! Here’s what I’m thinking… There are hundreds of community radio stations in the UK alone and if you have expertise that could genuinely benefit people in your local area, then there could be an opportunity on a local station. There may also be opportunities across a wider range of stations or even to set up your own station! The regulatory landscape around this is important and needs careful consideration. Businesses cannot just provide content to stations to broadcast without ensuring listeners are aware of any commercial relationship, etc. As a former commercial radio programmer and director of a company that holds an Ofcom Digital Sound Programme licence, I can help you create and pitch a radio show idea that will be engaging for listeners, beneficial for the station and your #business, while complying with the rules. Drop me a DM to find out more. #thoughtleadership

Celebrating World Radio Day As we navigate through the vast ocean of digital media, podcasts, and streaming services, it's easy to overlook the enduring charm and significance of the humble radio. On this World Radio Day, let's take a moment to celebrate radio as a timeless communication medium, exploring its unique qualities that continue to resonate amid the clamour of the modern digital landscape. At some point when i worked as a local radio host, it made me realize that Radio is a powerful platform for local voices, allowing communities to share their stories, concerns, and celebrations. The radio offered local content, strengthening community bonds and addressing issues that matter to people on a local/regional level. While podcasts and digital platforms offer on-demand content, radio retained it's distinct human touch. The live broadcasts, the spontaneity, and the connection between radio hosts and listeners create an intimate and immediate experience. While radio has a rich history, it has also evolved with the times. In an age where digital content can sometimes feel overwhelming, radio stands out as a reliable companion. On this World Radio Day, let's honour the enduring spirit of radio. As we celebrate the rise of podcasts and digital media, let's not forget the unique qualities that make radio an irreplaceable part of our lives. #WorldRadioDay #radio #Theatreofthemind #digitalmedia #journalism #communications #community #engagement #radioday #reporting

At a time when more than two-thirds of its population are digital audio listeners, Canada is about to regulate podcasts - and people are calling it blatant censorship. ❌ To an outsider like myself, it’s strange to see this for two reasons. First, digital audio has grown to a level that now rightfully rivals the traditionally strong radio listener base. This means the opportunity to monetize is massive, which should be a boon for everyone during economic turbulence. The second reason is that, apparently, the Canadian radio market is one of the worst-performing radio markets, with dwindling audiences and poor finances. In that context, shouldn’t podcasts be viewed as a lifeline that can radically change the digital audio landscape? My dear Canucks in the network and beyond, what are your thoughts on this? #podcast #canada #digitalaudio #radio

Can you regulate podcasts without breaching free speech? Canada’s new regulation laws have caused controversy with some calling it “one of the world’s most repressive online censorship schemes” (Glenn Greenwald) while Canada’s regulation teams insist that the new rules “ensure online streaming services make meaningful contributions to Canadian and Indigenous content”. Online censorship of any kind has always sparked an interesting debate within the rights of free speech. Podnews offer the opinion that Canadian radio is the most regulated in the Western world and coincidence or not it is also one of the worst-performing radio markets. Within the parameters of the strict audio market it is hardly surprising that they have taken a similar approach to podcasting, however, without strict guidance on what is and isn't seen as a ‘meaningful contribution’ it is hard to tell if these new rules will actually have any impact on the Canadian podcast output. We wonder… who is the one to draw the line of a meaningful contribution and if this were to be expanded… what podcasts would we have left?! https://lnkd.in/euNHrgMU #podcasting #thoughtleadership #podcastproduction #podcastexperts #audiocontent
