🌟 #Olympic Medalists Countries Display of sporting prowess : What Drives Success? The Economist explore the factors that contribute to a country's success in the Olympics. #GDP: Wealthier countries tend to perform better, but it's not the only factor. #investment : decent amount of money to invest in training and facilities #Population: Larger populations can provide a broader talent pool, but smaller countries can still punch above their weight. #TalentPool: Access to quality training facilities, coaches, and resources is crucial. A few notes from The previous Economist magazine : 1. "The most successful countries at the Olympics tend to be those with a strong sporting culture, a large talent pool and a decent amount of money to invest in training and facilities." - The Economist, 2012 2. "The relationship between GDP per head and Olympic success is strong... Richer countries can afford to spend more on sports infrastructure, coaching and training." - The Economist, 2016 3. "Population matters, but it is not the only factor... Small countries can punch above their weight if they have a strong sporting culture and invest wisely in training and facilities." - The Economist, 2018 4. "The Olympics are as much about brains as brawn... Mental toughness, strategy and teamwork are just as important as physical strength and endurance." - The Economist, 2020 I'm thinking 🤔 So, what matters most? Is it the country's resources or the individual's mindset? Other Dynamics factors? #Team : A supportive team in Sports Culture and environment can make all the difference. #Physical & #Mental Toughness: The ability to practice & perform under pressure is key. #Coaching and #Mentorship: Guidance from experienced coaches and mentors can help athletes reach their full potential. #Passion and Drive: Personal motivation and dedication are essential. This not a work related post and also not an April Fool's day post, yet it includes some lessons learned. To receive a 2nd place trophy for the first time on clay surface on medium level on April Fool's day, it is the last thing i would personally expect in this tournament (which included a list of 64 medium level players) . Especially, taking into consideration the way i had to manage my way into the final: all 5 matches played had a duration of 3 hours each, 10 match points against me in total had to be saved in the last moment, winning each match (except the final) on the critical details by 2 points difference, having to make a comeback in 2 out of those matches from a score of 2-5 against me. The lessons learned from this tennis tournament and applicable into other spectrums of our life are: always be persistent, focused, keep an eye on spotting out small opportunities, take quick decisions with some calculated risk and enjoy the experience when you encounter opponents that play better.

This weekend is the Olympic Trials for Canadian relay sprinters in the following events; 4x100m and 4x400m both men and women plus the mixed 4x400 event. The event returns to Nassau, Bahamas where 28 Canadian athletes will attempt to qualify these 5 relay squads for the Paris Olympics. As each of the 5 teams will field 4 runners to the starting position, the coaching staff lead by Glenroy Gilbert will have to select from a list of 6 to 8 athletes on each squad. On the surface this may seem obvious in an event like the men’s 4x100m where long term success is part of Canadian history. Not so much in the other events where we have not been represented at all such as the men’s 4x400m and mixed 4x400m. Our sprinters train in a variety of groups and universities in the Americas and have never been at an event this season. Comparing the results in a variety of early season results from around the world is complicated by sprinters facing a variety of environmental factors such as wind, altitude and temperature. World rankings exclude wind aided times. Here are results that are excluded: Duan Asemoto,100m 9.98 (3.4) Aaron Brown 100m10.05 (3.4), Eliezer Adjibi 100m 10.05 (4.0), Sadie McCreath 100m 11.16 (3.5), Crystal Emmanuel-Ahy 100m 11.28 (2.2), Jacqueline Madago 100m 11.29 (3.5), Andre De Grasse 200m 20.11 (3.1), Jeremiah Lauzon 200m 20.71 (3.9), Chris Morales-Williams 200m 20.87 (4.5), Audrey Leduc 200m 22.77 (3.0), Makenzy Pierre-Webster 200m 23.19 (2.7), Aiyanna Stiverne 200m 23.40 (3.0). The process in Nassau could look like this: A total of 14 countries will be selected for Paris in each of the relays. 32 teams will be assigned into 4 heats of 8 countries with the top 2 teams selected May 4. The remaining 32 countries will move on to May 5 to form 3 heats of 8 countries with the top 2 teams in each section creating 6 more countries. This qualifies a total of 14 countries for the Olympic Games. Streaming video coverage both live and delayed are available in Canada from online CBC Sports.

Imagine having a conversation with your peers and you asked them about Michele Jordan, Lebron James, Larry Bird, Mia Hamm, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, etc and they responded with "who"? You would be flabbergasted, wouldn't you? This is how I feel when I talk about the great Major Taylor. A man that doesn't get the recognition he deserves. His story inspired me in more ways than I can explain. I was competing in the road world championships, 100 years after Major won his first world title in 1899. Check out this doc to learn more. https://lnkd.in/gZbx_HDG
