To support professionals working with disabled children, adults with learning disabilities and their families, Research in Practice has released several new open access resources and events for #LearningDisabilityWeek. This includes a new resource, co-published by Research in Practice and the Council for Disabled Children, the briefing explores the challenges faced by disabled children and families when requesting support. It also examines local authorities’ statutory responsibilities when assessing needs, applying eligibility criteria, and providing services. The briefing looks at the benefits of adopting a strengths-based and needs-led approach to assessment and key features of a needs-led eligibility framework and how this can inform a lawful and transparent approach to providing services for disabled children and their families. It takes a village to raise a child, but is there a village of support for disabled parents? Our panelists told a very contrasting story. Most people are encouraged to have children, but disabled people – are actively discouraged from doing so. If there exists a support system for parents, then what does support for disabled parents look like? Does it even exist? Is it only the grandparents? Or are neighbours, apps, or sometimes even children themselves involved in the collective growth of the family? We asked disabled people what it means to be a "good" parent. What are the challenges they face in their unique situations and how does one get over the constant imposter syndrome of being a parent? What sets my books apart from other children’s books? 👉 They feature the first disabled children’s lead character and brand in MouMou, a fun-loving and kind super-kid who happens to have an extra chromosome! 👉 I introduce different disabilities in every episode, giving children who don’t get represented much, that much needed representation, and provide an opportunity for both children and adults to learn more about the various disabilities and conditions that exisit. 👉 My words spark discussions and encourage children to ask questions, 1 in 6 of us have a disability, so children should be educated on them. 👉 Although they feature disabilities, my books are read and enjoyed by ALL children as they can all find a character in my stories they can relate to! 👉 I’m sparking a movement with MouMou and Friends, it gives me a platform to talk about much-needed change in our society.
