In 2020, I embarked on the terrifying and expensive journey of getting my company accredited by the International Accreditors for Continuing Education and Training (IACET) to provide continuing education units for some of its learning experiences. Since then, we've been accredited by the Society for Human Resources Management (SHRM) and the Human Resources Certification Institute (HRCI). For several years, Paul Kreiter, M.Ed, my former speaking agent, encouraged me to take a step like this to grow my speaking career.  Lately, I've seen that United States federal government employees have been taking some of our courses for their continuing education—WOW! It's one thing to believe in yourself and invest in a project. It's another to go through the whole process of getting your company accredited for continuing education, which may have been one of the most challenging things I've ever done in my life. Seeing that employees from our government and Fortune 500 companies are finding our content valuable and using it to further their continuing education is a whole new level. How do you quantify what your experience is worth? Our experiences as individuals are so subjective that it may seem like this would be a near-impossible thing to define, particularly across a broad spectrum of people. #RPL recognises that each one of us has our own individual knowledge, experience and life-skills to bring to the table, and its often this richness of experiences that makes our capacity to contribute so valuable. The 5-step RPL application process acknowledges the nature of recognising a persons own individual experience, and encourages applicants to reflect on their experiential and informal learning in order to strengthen their application. This is important as often, we don't realise all of the skills and knowledge that we have accumulated over the years, and can overlook valuable experience or skills. The five stages are: 1. Information 2. Identification 3. Documentation 4. Assessment 5. Certification The RPL Project is partnered with fourteen higher education institutes right across the country with Project Leads available to guide and inform applicants on the process. In addition to individuals, many of our partner institutes work with businesses to identify staff training needs and help them on a pathway to upskill in order to gain new, much-needed qualifications.
