🔔 NHTSA Recall Alert – Water Damage to Starter Solenoid May Cause Fire 🔥 Hyundai Motor America is recalling certain 2015-2016 Genesis, 2017-2019 Genesis G80, Genesis G90, and 2019 Genesis G70 vehicles. As stated in the documents associated with the recall, the he starter solenoid in the vehicles could be contaminated with water if operated in abnormally wet conditions, such as a flooded road. Moisture contamination within the starter solenoid could cause an electrical short over time, resulting in significant overcurrent and increasing the risk of an engine compartment fire while parked or driving. Hyundai has confirmed at least 12 unique thermal incidents isolated to the starter assembly in the U.S. from September 29, 2017, through July 9, 2023. The remedy for the recall condition is a relay that provides power to the starter solenoid during vehicle startup only, rather than continuously. A protective boot was added to the starter solenoid magnetic switch as a production running change on January 23, 2019. The recall potentially involves 90,907 vehicles. #firehazard #recall #productliability #subrogation

“The #Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act includes a provision for GAO to study vehicle recall repair rates. This report examines (1) the primary factors that influence vehicle recall repairs, and the extent to which NHTSA has conducted research to identify these factors; and (2) how NHTSA has identified lessons learned from efforts to collaborate with third parties to improve recall repair rates, among other objectives.” #IIJA #NHTSA #recall study my Q: is #software a product or a service? #law

🔔 NHTSA Recall Alert – Fire from Overheated Power Seat Motor 🔥 Kia America, Inc. is recalling certain 2020-2024 Kia Telluride vehicles equipped with a front power seat assembly cover that can dislodge if there is an external impact with excessive force to the front power seat side cover and/or seat slide knob. The dislodged cover can result in internal misalignment of the seat motor control switch. A misaligned seat motor control switch with a stuck seat slide knob can lead to continuous operation of a seat motor. Over time, this can result in overheating of a seat motor, thereby increasing the risk of a fire while driving or while parked. As of May 29, 2024, Kia was aware of 7 unique incidents, including one localized under-seat fire. The remedy for the recall condition is the installation of a bracket to reinforce the power seat switch back cover and replacement of the seat slide knob with an improved one. Owners should park their vehicles outdoors and away from other vehicles or structures until the recall repair has been performed. The recall potentially involves 462,869 vehicles. #firehazard #recall #productliability #subrogation

The Urgent Need for NHTSA Leadership Safety advocates estimate that at least 50 children die each year in crashes involving a seatback collapse. This alarming statistic underscores the urgency of updating vehicle safety standards—a task that falls under NHTSA's purview. “For too long, families have had to worry about the safety of their most precious cargo in their vehicles: children in the back seat,” stated Democratic Sen. Ed Markey of Massachusetts. Despite the passage of over two years since the inclusion of a provision in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law mandating NHTSA to update the standard for seatback safety, the agency has yet to take action." This inaction is not an isolated incident. NHTSA’s track record reveals a pattern of missed deadlines and prolonged investigations, often with grave implications: 💣 ARC Inflator Recall: A decision on the recall of 52 million ARC airbag inflators, which can explode and emit deadly shrapnel, is overdue. With two fatalities and seven injuries already linked to these inflators, NHTSA’s eight-year-long investigation has yet to culminate in a ruling. 💣 Takata Desiccated Inflators: Similarly, the recall of 36 million desiccated Takata inflators remains unresolved. Despite the known risks associated with the defective ammonium nitrate used in these inflators, and two ruptures occurring in 2023, NHTSA has not released any information following over two years of investigation. NHTSA’s inability to meet its own deadlines and enforce regulations raises concerns about its effectiveness in protecting the public. It’s time for NHTSA to appoint confirmed Administrators who can provide the leadership needed to address these urgent safety issues. #automotive #safety #publicsafety #Takata #ARC #airbag #recalls

Commissioner of the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles | Transformational Leader | Bringing years of experience in elevating performance, enhancing CX, and driving strategic growth
It's encouraging to see manufacturers and regulatory bodies like the NHTSA taking swift action to address industry issues. The recall process, while inconvenient for vehicle owners, is a safety net in the automotive industry. The frequency and variety of these recalls raise questions about quality control processes in the commercial vehicle manufacturing industry. It suggests a need for more rigorous testing and quality assurance measures before vehicles are released to the market. #Safety #CommercialVehicles #Recall #RoadSafety #CDL

NHTSA warns of ‘cheap, substandard’ replacement air bag inflators; BMW issues Takata recall The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued a grave warning about the dangers of counterfeit air bag inflators. These substandard parts, often manufactured overseas and sold at significantly lower prices, pose a serious threat to the lives of used car owners and buyers. In recent months, three fatalities and two severe injuries have been linked to these defective inflators, which can explode upon impact, sending deadly metal shrapnel into vehicle occupants. To protect themselves, consumers are urged to thoroughly investigate the history of any used vehicle before purchase and to have it inspected by a qualified mechanic. NHTSA also recommends avoiding online purchases of automotive parts from unknown sources, as these are more likely to be counterfeit. The agency is working to combat this issue by collaborating with law enforcement to identify and apprehend those involved in the distribution of these dangerous parts. Additionally, automakers continue to grapple with the ongoing Takata airbag recall, a separate but equally critical safety issue affecting millions of vehicles.
