Why Delta Check is Important for Medical Lab Technologists? As a medical lab technologist, you are responsible for ensuring the accuracy and reliability of laboratory test results. One important tool that can help you achieve this is the delta check. Delta check is a quality control measure that compares current test results to previous results for the same patient. This helps identify any significant changes in the patient's condition or errors in the testing process. Delta checks are particularly useful for detecting errors in specimen identification, specimen integrity, errors in manual data entry, or possible analytical errors. These are quality control issues that usually cannot be detected by testing QC materials. Here are some reasons why delta check is important for medical lab technologists: 1. Ensures Accuracy of Test Results: Delta check helps identify any significant changes in a patient's test results, which could indicate a change in the patient's condition or an error in the testing process. This helps ensure the accuracy and reliability of test results. 2. Helps Identify Laboratory Errors: Delta check can help identify laboratory errors such as incorrect sample handling or processing, equipment malfunction, or technician error. This helps ensure that corrective action can be taken to prevent future errors. 3. Supports Patient Safety: By identifying any significant changes in a patient's test results, delta check can help support patient safety. This allows medical professionals to take appropriate action to address any changes in the patient's condition and provide the best possible care. As a medical lab technologist, it is important to understand the significance of delta check and incorporate it into your quality control measures. By doing so, you can help ensure the accuracy and reliability of laboratory test results, identify laboratory errors, and support patient safety. #copied

Title: Bridging the Gap in Laboratory Management: The Need for Mandatory Training and National Standards The laboratory profession is evolving rapidly with the advent of new technologies, yet a challenge remains: the reluctance of Medical college professors to embrace these changes. While their experience is invaluable, the unfamiliarity with emerging technologies has led to a reluctance to engage fully with modern practices. This hesitation, sometimes stemming from imposter syndrome, can result in juniors feeling unsupported when they seek guidance, making it difficult for them to grasp the complexities of laboratory management. This knowledge gap highlights the need for structured training programs. Drawing a parallel to the banking industry's transition from paper-based to digital systems, where even senior staff had to learn new skills, it's clear that laboratory professionals too must adapt. A national training requirement, including a certification exam for those signing off on laboratory reports, would ensure that all professionals maintain a high standard of practice, regardless of their experience level. The importance of accurate laboratory reports cannot be overstated. High-end hospitals and skilled doctors rely on these reports to make critical decisions for patient care. Ensuring the accuracy of these reports through mandatory quality control measures, such as third-party controls, is essential. These should become standard practice, guaranteeing that every lab report is accompanied by a corresponding quality control report, thereby enhancing the credibility of the results. It is time for quality-conscious laboratories to advocate for these changes, ensuring that all laboratory professionals are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge. This approach will not only bridge the current gap in laboratory management but also elevate the overall quality of patient care across the healthcare system. By implementing these measures, we can create a more robust framework for laboratory management, one that supports both seasoned professionals and newcomers, ensuring that the future of laboratory work is both accurate and reliable.

Communication When I initially started my medical technologist career, my first job was in the microbiology department. I remember being on the urine bench, having to read stacks and stacks of agar plates that were taller than me. Even though it started of as a challenge, it taught me so much more than just identifying pathogens in urine. I had to learn how to communicate effectively, how to structure my workflow and even though it was the same process, the same agar plates, the same microorganisms being identified, working with different people to make the process work was important. People make processes work. You could tell when there was no communication or teamwork because at the end of the day when the plates had to be stacked and put back into the incubator, there would be pick offs missing and this meant having to go back and do additional work and it resulted in a lack of confidence and trust. Communication is important, it brings clarity, provides structure and everyone works towards the same goal. When you are a member of a team, communication is a two way street. We listen and we speak. There's no "your way or the highway scenario". When there is clear communication, there are no assumptions. When you ASSUME, you make an ASS(of)U(&)ME. Gerrit? lol.
