Happy Juneteenth! Today, we celebrate the end of slavery in the United States, a monumental day marking freedom for millions of Black Americans. We come together to honor those who fought for liberation and acknowledge the immense progress made since that fateful June 19th in 1865. However, Juneteenth also serves as a stark reminder that the journey towards true equality is far from over. While the chains of physical slavery were broken, the shackles of systemic racism and economic disparity remain. Black communities continue to face marginalization in finance, with limited access to capital and fair lending practices. Insurance systems often perpetuate inequalities, and educational opportunities can be unequal. The issue of reparations for the lasting effects of slavery deserves serious national discussion. For much of my government career in Detroit , I've dedicated myself to fighting against these very issues. Whether battling discriminatory lending practices or advocating for educational equity, I've seen firsthand the challenges faced by Black Americans striving for financial security and advancement. Juneteenth is a time to celebrate, but it's also a call to action. We cannot be complacent. We must continue to dismantle the systems that perpetuate inequality and empower Black communities to achieve financial independence and true social mobility. Let's honor the spirit of Juneteenth by amplifying Black voices, advocating for policies that promote racial equity, and supporting Black-owned businesses. Together, we can build a future where the promise of liberty extends beyond the absence of chains, and towards a society where opportunity thrives for all. #Junteeth

Last Friday, the much anticipated “State of Black America” report was released by the National Urban League (NUL). Friday morning, NUL President and CEO Marc Morial discussed the report and its findings during an interview with CBS Mornings co-hosts Gayle King, Nate Burleson, and Tony Dokoupil. The interview can be viewed at https://lnkd.in/e_HWRtKn The “State of Black America,” now in its 48th edition, is the highly anticipated source for thought leaders focusing on racial equality in America. The 2024 State of Black America report examines the impact of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, marking the first significant effort by the U.S. to address the racial caste system. Sixty years later, the publication highlights that the struggle for equality persists, emphasizing the ongoing challenges and progress made in the pursuit of a more just and equitable future. Every year, June 19th serves as a reminder of the long struggle for civil rights and the ongoing efforts to achieve racial equality. It encourages reflection on the progress made while also highlighting the challenges that remain. Research clearly shows that Black Americans have been made vulnerable to disease and psychological stressors. This has resulted in dramatic inequalities in community resources, like access to treatment. Black History Month is a time to recognize that our commitment to equity extends beyond a single month and beyond a single issue area. From voting rights to free expression to policing to reproductive justice, we fight the battle against systemic inequities every day. During this month dedicated to hearing Black voices, we hope that the stories told, the awareness gained, and the discussions ignited serve to fortify us all for the coming fights. Let us remain committed in our dedication to upholding the rights of all people. Now more than ever, we must stand up and demand equality; we must honor and celebrate our differences. On June 19, 1865, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation, enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, were finally informed of their freedom.
