Over the past year, a discernible trend has emerged as organizations streamline their technology and data leadership roles, particularly those related to chief data and analytics officers (CDO/CDAO), and where they exist, chief AI officers. The CDO/CDAO position, despite gaining prevalence, has been marked by short tenures and ambiguity regarding roles and responsibilities. According to the 2024 CDO Insights: Data & Generative AI report, there has been a noticeable shift towards consolidation within a broader spectrum of technology, data, and digital transformation responsibilities. This approach is often overseen by what has been deemed a “supertech leader” who typically reports into the CEO. Titles for this fully-comprehensive role are more traditional - chief information officer, chief information technology officer, and chief digital and technology officer - and can disguise the breadth of impact the executive has on the business. “The fervor around generative AI has made many companies question whether they were doing enough to capture the opportunities or avoid the threats of AI on their business,” said Partner, Scott Jacobs. "Fewer companies have gone for the Chief AI officer so far. As this report points out, AI responsibility is more often added to the expanding remit of the CTIO.
