It is undeniable that there are intensive efforts of government institutions, development partners, CSOs, and other stakeholders in fostering entrepreneurship in Zanzibar. However, a lack of cohesive collaboration among these entities has resulted in fragmented initiatives, with each organization pursuing individual agendas. This disjointed approach has inadvertently widened the gap between support services and the actual needs of entrepreneurs. This led to not reaching the potential positive impact and leading to inefficiencies in resource allocation. These efforts significantly enhanced their businesses and maximized their impact on the local economy. The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) aims to create a single market for goods and services that will promote economic integration across the continent. The current state of Zanzibar's entrepreneurs reveals a concerning lack of readiness to effectively compete in the international market. Without adequate preparation, the implementation of this agreement geared toward continental trade may position Zanzibar as a consumer rather than a producer. This may not only undermine economic autonomy but also perpetuate dependency on external sources for goods and services. To mitigate this risk, it is imperative to prioritize capacity-building initiatives that empower entrepreneurs with the skills, knowledge, and resources necessary to thrive in the international marketplace. Furthermore, Zanzibar may lack the institutional capacity and expertise to effectively implement and enforce the provisions of AfCFTA. Capacity-building efforts are needed to strengthen institutions, enhance regulatory frameworks, and improve trade facilitation measures. By investing in targeted training programs and fostering strategic partnerships, Zanzibar can position itself as a competitive player in the global arena. I urge the Ministry of Trade, ZNICC, ICOYACA, as well as local and international development partners, to step up and shoulder the responsibility of creating an enabling environment for entrepreneurs and prioritize equipping them with the necessary skills and providing them with the resources they need to thrive. By doing so, Zanzibar can effectively capitalize on the implementation of this agreement, ensuring that its entrepreneurs are not only prepared to compete but also positioned to excel in the global market. Streamlining efforts and fostering synergies among stakeholders could significantly enhance the effectiveness of entrepreneurship support programs led to unlock the full potential of Zanzibar's economy and fostering sustainable growth for the benefit of all stakeholders involved #AfCFTA #Agreement #youth #entrepreneur #africa #business #capacitybuilding #government #donor Pamoja Youth Initiative ZAFAYCO Zanzibar Ambassador Togolani Mavura Mustafa Sharif Vijana Think Tank YALI Regional Leadership Center East Africa Juma Burhan Hamad Hamad TMARC TANZANIA

The Official Report from the Africa SME Assembly will be ready on Monday morning But before then, here are a few metrics from the report; 1. We had a total registration of 2077 businesses from a total of 16 African countries 2. On the day of the Assembly, we had 467 attendees, including our speakers. The number would have been more as most would have joined virtually 3. From the registration, we had 67% female entrepreneurs and 33% male 4. We had 60% entrepreneurs between the ages 18 - 35 years old 5. The major pain points of these entrepreneurs are access to finance and their inability to access credible networks 6. 408 people have registered for the SME Accelerators Program - A post-event activity to incubate SMEs. It kicks off in May 2024 We would be working with organizations and individuals for the Accelerator program. They include Sebastien CELESTINE, Ajibola Jinadu, Dr. Faith Nwaobia, Tanya Kabuya Bill Huston, Michael Frisk, Mr. Vincent Edigin of GreenBii, Omotola Dorcas, Wofai Samuel, and the Nigeria America Chambers of Commerce, Mr Obafemi Darabidan MCIB and many other To us, the journey just started, and the Assembly was just the beginning Watch out for the whole, detailed report by Monday
