Thank you, Apex Benefits, for highlighting National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month! Here are some significant facts, cited from the U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants website: - Approximately 23% of all adults in the U.S. have a mental illness - Although rates of mental illness in some BIPOC groups are comparable or slightly lower than in White people, mental illness among BIPOC is likely to be more persistent and BIPOC often bear a disproportionately high burden of disability resulting from mental illnesses. Research suggests that a lack of culturally sensitive screening tools that detect mental illness, coupled with structural barriers could contribute to underdiagnosis of mental illness among people of color. - People who identify as being two or more races (25%) are most likely to report any mental illness within the past year than any other race/ethnic group. - In 2022, among adults with any mental illness, Hispanic (40%), Black (38%), and Asian (36%) adults were less likely than White adults (56%) to receive mental health services. Let's work together to change the stigma! #NationalMinorityMentalHealthAwarenessMonth #BIPOC #DEI #MentalHealth #EmployeeBenefits

Persistent systemic and institutional barriers deter most Spanish-speaking people from getting the mental health care they need. Only 35% of Latino/x adults in the US with mental illness get care, according to the National Alliance on Mental Illness. Sanarai is working to change that by connecting the Latino/x community to mental health professionals in Latin America and the US for culturally sensitive, Spanish-language emotional support and counseling at affordable prices. We are proud to invest in Sanarai and its mission. Adelante. #mentalhealth #mentalhealthmatters #saludmental #mentalhealthawareness

Normalizing conversations around mental health in the workplace is extremely important. For #WorldMentalHealthDay, I interviewed David Hillen, who pursued a mental health first aid certification and eventually supported with training Gildan's entire Australian office. Now, employees know how to identify signs of mental health issues in people around them, and are equipped with actions for early intervention. Employee-led initiatives such as this are crucial in bringing about positive change and fostering safer, more open work environments. And as David says, it's all about taking that first step. Read David's experience of promoting an important cause while inspiring people to join him in his journey. #MakingApparelBetter #MadeWithRespect
In 2023, our entire Australian office team became certified in mental health first aid, becoming equipped to identify and support those in need around them. This #WorldMentalHealthDay, we sat down with the individual driving this initiative, David Hillen, Sales Director at Gildan, to learn more about the project’s inception. National Minority Mental Health Month aims to raise awareness about the unique mental health challenges faced by minority communities. It is important to recognize and address the disparities in access to mental health resources and services that exist for minority populations. This month serves as a reminder to prioritize mental health and wellness for all individuals, regardless of race or ethnicity. By promoting education, advocacy, and support, we can work towards eliminating stigma and ensuring that everyone has access to the care they need. Let us use this month to start important conversations, break down barriers, and promote understanding and acceptance within our communities. Together, we can create a more inclusive and supportive environment for those struggling with mental health issues. #minoritymentalhealthawarenessmonth #advocate #support

Mental Health Awareness Month is an opportunity for us to come together and break the stigmas around mental health through advocacy and education. This year, we asked our clinicians to shed light on myths providers often come across and how to address them. Have you had to debunk any of these myths (or others) in your practice? Let us know how you’d respond in the comments below 👇 #MHAM2024 #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth2024 #MentalHealth #SelfCare

July is National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, dedicated to raising awareness about the unique mental health challenges faced by minority communities. This observance aims to promote understanding, advocacy, and support for mental health issues that disproportionately affect racial and ethnic minorities. By acknowledging these challenges and fostering open dialogue, we can work towards creating more inclusive and equitable mental health care systems. Let's use this month to amplify diverse voices, educate ourselves, and advocate for accessible mental health resources for all. Together, we can promote mental wellness and support for every individual in our communities. #MinorityMentalHealth #MentalHealthMatters #MentalHealthAwareness #BIPOCMentalHealth #accessiblecare Source: KFF Survey on Racism, Discrimination, and Health (June 6- August 14, 2023)

Mental Health Advocate & Consultant @ Simon Katterl Consulting | Supporting humane mental health systems
The best thing the Commission could have done to promote lived experience leadership would be to lift a finger to support advocacy for the Lived Experience Agency, due in 2022. A core Royal Commission recommendation and election promise. That's not my opinion, that's what the Mental Health and Wellbeing Act requires under the Commissions: 💠 Objectives: https://lnkd.in/gG5Arzwj 💠 Functions: https://lnkd.in/gMVZQeq3
Our Consumer Commissioner, Maggie Toko, recently shared her insights and perspectives at a 2024 Mental Health Week Event - The Yarra and Boroondara Mental Health Alliance forum. Maggie spoke about her lived experience, ‘From Compulsory Treatment to Commissioner’ and shared her experience of running a Hearing Voices group. Addressing the audience, Maggie said, “As individuals, we only have to do as much as a pebble because collectively we will make a rock.” She encouraged the Mental Health Alliance members to continue to champion the rights of consumers and to elevate the voices of lived experience. Under the Mental Health and Wellbeing Act 2022, one of the Commission's functions is to elevate lived experience leadership and support the effective participation of people with lived experience in decision-making processes.
