Someday, and I hope it’s soon, government officials will come to understand that the provision of food is the smallest investment with the biggest impact. Someday, I hope that government, healthcare, and insurance companies will understand that food resources should be the first line of defense for better education, mental health, and disease prevention. Someday, I hope that hunger is extinct. Until that day, I will continue to fight for food security.
14 million U.S. children - one in five - live in households that struggle against hunger, and we know that child hunger soars during the summer when traditional school meals are unavailable. Every eligible child in the country should have access to Summer EBT, regardless of which state they live in. https://lnkd.in/eJTYfqPK

Over 200 food pantry leaders from across our city provided their expert input on how state policies can fight food insecurity among New Yorkers who are grappling with the high cost of living. In partnership with Food Bank For New York City and United Way of New York City, our city’s three largest anti-hunger organizations, we identified three ways that State policies can help create food secure futures: 1. Get more food to people who need it by investing in the emergency food system and expanding SNAP benefits and eligibility 2. Make childcare affordable to help alleviate a key factor in higher food insecurity rates for families 3. Improve housing stability to protect New Yorkers who are rent-burdened and 3X as likely to experience food insecurity We recently sent these policy priorities in a letter to Governor Hochul. 88% of neighbors facing hunger say federal and local governments should treat hunger as an urgent crisis. Feeding America's Insights Report 2023 is a deep dive into the power of community voices leaning into their lived expertise to guide advocacy that increases food security. Over 1,100 survey recipients shared their insights on what it is like to experience hunger, how they juggle complex systems for security, and give a comprehensive view of hunger navigation. At the heart of it all: Preserving Dignity. 87% of neighbors surveyed agreed that if Congress passes policies to reduce hunger and food insecurity, it is important that these policies support people’s dignity and choices in what they feed their families.
