Last night, at The Explorers Club in New York, WCS's Dr. Tracie Seimon, based at the Bronx Zoo, and #NatGeoExplorer Anton Seimon gave a talk on how the #climatecrisis is causing glaciers to disappear high in the Andes on Cordillera Vilcanota in Peru, contributing to biological, ecological, and social landscape changes. 🌿 New Publication Alert! 🌿 Grazing in the Alps plays a vital role in maintaining its unique landscapes and rich biodiversity. However, shepherds today face many challenges beyond just the return of wolves. Protecting herds, promoting biodiversity, and fostering understanding between various users of Alpine regions are all key issues. 🐑🌍 Our latest publication, available in the four Alpine languages, bridges the knowledge gap between shepherds across different Alpine countries. It offers essential terms and concepts on shepherding, enabling better communication and collaboration to tackle these challenges. 🌄🤝 🔗 Check out the publication here: 10 Key Concepts of the Pastoral Economy 👉 https://lnkd.in/egkMsicx #Biodiversity #SustainableAgriculture #Shepherding #AlpineRegions #KnowledgeSharing #CIPRA #GrazingManagement

Opinion piece: Encouraging Indigenous, biocultural land care can help mitigate future fire disasters in Hawaii and elsewhere. Here’s how. Last year’s fires in Maui were a stark reminder of the dangers we face. With plantations abandoned, tourism on the rise, and an increase in real estate development, the risks of catastrophic fire in Hawaii have escalated. A big part of the solution is clear: providing Indigenous and local people access to resources that can revitalize biocultural practices, which have long adapted to local ecology that could materially benefit communities. Spa Monopole partnered with the region of Wallonia, the University of Liège, the Natural Science Museum in Tervuren, WWF Belgium, and Pairi Daiza zoo and botanical garden to reintroduce black grouse to the catchment area of Spa. When the project launched in 2017, the black grouse was on the brink of extinction due to natural enemies such as foxes and environmental degradation. The once healthy population was reduced to just three individual birds. 🐦🐦🐦 The black grouse is emblematic to the region and serves as an umbrella species for biodiversity. They thrive only in areas where life is in perfect balance. Restoring biodiversity was the first step, followed by reintroducing the birds. Today, the population of black grouse in the area is flourishing. 🦢 Gain more insight into other biodiversity projects in the natural mineral water and spring water sector: https://lnkd.in/eFxqTvkw #NatureGuardians

At Protect the Andes, we use innovative methods like bioacoustics to protect and understand the ecosystems we restore. Soundscape, recordings of a location, provide valuable insights into the biodiversity of the areas we work to safeguard. In this video, we invite you to immerse yourself in the captivating sounds of sunrise and sunset at the Magdalena River, where our latest restoration project provides wildlife with safe crossing and this, thanks to the support of our members: https://lnkd.in/dKaQ4SGY By analyzing these recordings, we can: 1️⃣ Identify the species present in the ecosystem, 2️⃣ Track changes in biodiversity over time, and 3️⃣ Assess the overall health of the environment. These soundscapes are not just data—they are an invitation to experience the incredible life that flourishes in the Andes. 🎧 Curious about the science and experience behind soundscapes? Learn more in this video: https://lnkd.in/dciQSksW 🎥 Want to discover the restoration work that made this possible? Our #ForestRestorationTalk Series is back! In this first webinar of 2025, we will dive into the fascinating world of primary and old-growth #forests in East and South-East Europe. In this webinar, Martin Mikoláš and Miroslav Svoboda from the Czech University of Life Sciences Prague will share their extensive research on the structure, dynamics, and #biodiversity of these forests in the Balkans and Carpathians. As part of the REMOTE project, they have spent over 15 years studying these forests, their #carbon storage capacity, and their critical role as habitats for rare species. The discussion will also touch on how this knowledge is shaping ecological forest management strategies that mimic natural processes to preserve biodiversity. 🕓 4:00 PM CET, 12 February 2025 🗓️ Register here: https://lnkd.in/d5rytmY9

2moI love nature and wildlife photography. I traveled to Uganda to pursue my dream and had already opened a YouTube channel to share my journey. I bought a camera, but I didn’t have enough money for a passport, visa, and travel costs. So, I decided to use what I had and traveled through Nigeria, Cameroon, and the Central African Republic. While crossing into the DRC, I was nearly arrested, lost everything, and was sent back. I had to seek help from the Nigerian embassy to return home. Now, I'm back in Nigeria, feeling hopeless and depressed. But I’m ready to start over. I'm an introvert, passionate about nature, and open to volunteering as a wildlife photographer to support conservation projects. Please, I need your help to make my dream a reality.
