Have you ever taken that leap into the unknown? Have you ever had to quit a job? Well, let me share my journey of leaving a job to dive into the Kenya Wildlife Service for my Veterinary Medicine Internship. It's been a transformative ride! 🐾🌿 As I reflect on quitting my job, I recall the mix of excitement and nervousness. Leaving the familiar was daunting, but my passion for Veterinary Medicine was an irresistible force. It was time to embrace the unknown and embark on a new chapter with Kenya Wildlife Service. The decision wasn't easy, but it was the right one. Stepping into the Wildlife Service meant more than just a change in the workplace. It was an immersion into my passion—a chance to contribute to wildlife health, conservation, and a deeper understanding of our ecosystem. From day one, each moment at Kenya Wildlife Service has reinforced my love for Veterinary Medicine. Working amidst diverse wildlife, encountering unique challenges, and collaborating with experts has been nothing short of awe-inspiring. The learning curve has been steep, but incredibly rewarding. Treating wildlife, understanding their behaviors, and being part of conservation efforts have broadened my perspective on the interconnectedness of all living beings. As I navigate this fulfilling journey, I've come to realize that taking the leap was the best decision I could have made. It's deepened my passion for Veterinary Medicine, instilled a profound respect for nature, and reaffirmed my commitment to making a difference. I've only scratched the surface of this incredible experience. The student will receive a Master of Science degree in Biology as they complete coursework at NC State-Raleigh and a research project in collaboration with the North Carolina Zoo animals and staff. Tuition and health insurance will be covered for eligible students, and the student will serve as a teaching assistant for each academic semester of the 2 years. Students will work closely with PhD-level curatorial staff at the North Carolina Zoo as they design and conduct research, which may address a range of welfare-related topics, including but not limited to: enrichment, social behavior, space use, light cycles, diet, and seasonal or habitat changes. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to design, conduct, analyze, and disseminate research conducted at the North Carolina Zoo. The degree conferred would be relevant for a career in animal behavior research, particularly in a zoo setting. Qualifications: Qualified applicants must have a combination of the following: 1) a strong academic background in animal behavior, biology, conservation, or a related field; 2) at least 4 months of research experience (e.g., collecting data, creating hypotheses, managing data); 3) demonstrated interest in research or animal behavior through extracurricular internships, jobs, experiences, or other activities; and 4) some proficiency with data analysis using relevant software (excel, R, SPSS, SAS). This is an early career opportunity. Candidates without prior graduate-level experience will be preferred. The successful applicant will be expected to enroll at NC State for the fall term 2024 (tuition will be waived) and serve as a teaching assistant each semester for the full 2 years. “Captive CON$ervation” The Ambassador Animal Connection: AZA, ZAA and Roadside Zoos: “The Need to Breed, for Greed” Located in Murray, Nebraska, “Scatter Acres” is one of a fast growing plethora of unaccredited roadside zoos exploiting numerous species of exotic animals in the pseudo name of CON$ervation. Having previously worked for an AZA accredited zoo, I can attest to the fact that the “Association of Zoos & Aquariums” standards far exceed that of the “Zoological Association of America” (ZAA) accredited or roadside zoos. That being said, one aspect of AZA, ZAA and roadside zoos that is practically identical is their expansive and exploitive “ambassador animal” programs. AZA, ZAA and unaccredited roadside zoos across the country ontinue to breed, and purposefully human-imprint numerous species of exotic animals for the sole purpose of being exploited as “ambassador animals”. These sentient creatures spend a significant portion of their lives being exhibited for shows, special events and photo-ops, which oftentimes include “hands-on” encounters with the public. Zoos misguide the public into believing that “ambassador animal” programs contribute to the survival of said species in the wild.
