The creative industry has a problem.
We do visuals and we’re blind.
Let me explain.
Apparently Kevin Rapp started a snowball and after yesterday’s exchange in comments sparked by James Callahan’s post, I feel like it’s worth a deeper thought.
So what’s all the fuss about?
What James says in a self and problem-aware manner, is that we, creative studios, fall into talking pixels, but fail so badly communicating outcomes of our work.
Between us, advisors, we've long discussed how firms struggle to present their work in a way that demonstrates impact, not self-praise.
But hearing it from one of the acclaimed studios is new, and deserves recognition.
Because to tackle these issues we need collective awareness and momentum.
Communication thing is just a facet of a larger problem.
The real issue is an industry-wide value blindness.
Let's break it down:
1. We don't recognize the value we create. This requires a mindset shift.
2. We lack clarity about what our clients value. This takes understanding the value chains.
3. We fail to communicate that value through our websites, portfolios, etc.
4. We don't align with our clients on what constitutes value.
This leads to low client retention, lost time, profits, and impact.
Working with peers and clients and running my creative firms over two decades helped me not just experience but clearly distill these problems. From there, I looked for solutions, and that's how The Value Method was born. That's the foundation of Futurecrafting™ — my advisory practice for creative firms.

Here's my point: pretty proposals don't automatically translate into positive impact.
In a world driven by optics and visual storytelling, providers are striving to craft proposals that are not only visually appealing but also seemingly flawless. Yet, in this pursuit of flawless presentation, authenticity and genuine expertise are somehow getting lost in the noise.
The allure of aesthetics is taking precedence over substance.
It's time for a paradigm shift. Instead of 'Request for Proposals', let's call it 'Request for Solutions'. And, instead of being swayed by aesthetics, let's measure success by the impact created, the value delivered, and the integrity maintained.

My "day job" as a consultant is working as a product design leader. However, as I wrote about in "The Art of Creative Rebellion," it's important to engage creatively in projects beyond what you do to make a living. My point, in case it is still unclear, is that the role of technical and creative production experts is crucial in merging creativity with practicality. This fosters collaboration and transcends limitations, leading to a harmonious and impactful creative production. In our whimsical field, it's this blend that creates the extraordinary.
