Urban Tree Challenge Fund (UTCF)The Urban Tree Challenge Fund (UTCF) was first developed in response to the Government’s commitment to provide millions of pounds for planting both large and small trees in and around England’s towns and cities. The UTCF supports planting of large ‘standard’ trees and street trees – making an immediate impact to communities and ensuring other organisations who provide planting for smaller trees can continue to do so. Round 5 of the fund aims to level-up access to nature across the country, planting trees in socially deprived urban areas with low canopy cover, in proximity to healthcare and educational facilities https://lnkd.in/egNx8Csx

We are thrilled to be working with Central Highlands Water on Stage 2 of the Ballarat Sewer Build. This significant project marks a major upgrade to Ballarat's wastewater network, replacing century-old infrastructure to meet the demands of the city's rapidly expanding community and enhance wastewater management efficiency. This phase of the project has included laying 2km of pipeline, integrating deep excavations, micro tunnelling, trenching, river crossings, and above-ground sections. A key focus has been on respecting Ballarat's rich cultural heritage. We have taken special care near the Yarrowee River and historical landmarks to ensure our work honours and protects these significant sites. This includes a particular focus on the iconic bluestone structures and sites sacred to the Wadawurrung people. Our commitment to environmentally conscious construction has led to several impactful initiatives. We have prioritised recycling trees and vegetation removed during construction, donating them to local organisations like the Ballarat East Men’s Shed and the Ballarat Wildlife Park. Additionally, we've engaged the community in a tree planting day to help rejuvenate the project area. At Diona, enabling communities to thrive through the delivery of essential services is what motivates us. Working alongside Central Highlands Water and the Ballarat community is a privilege. This collaborative effort not only advances critical infrastructure but also strengthens the long-term well-being and sustainability of the region. #sustainableinfrastructure #enablingcommunitiestothrive #essentialservices

500m trees that’s 100 new nurseries growing a million trees a year for 5 years - what could aid this aim is new Low Interest loans for smaller startup nurseries (up to 10 acres) across the country to provide locally adapted suitable stock. AND don’t forget the rural communities and landscapes ( my recent visit to Idaho highlighted the tree desert /farmers need help too & could make the biggest impact with trees for future food resiliency ) #foodtrees

While this may be a highly productive system for growing crops, one major drawback is that this system relies on so much plastic infrastructure to function, plastic that has a limited lifespan and will one day end up in the landfill.

Bad news to hear susdrain / CIRIA from tomorrow is to start charging £25 per PDF download. Text below copied from a post by Wendy Allen on another social media site, as she puts it so well why this is such a bad idea. "For all of you real people doing or learning or wanting to find out more about sustainable drainage, TIME IS RUNNING OUT TO DOWNLOAD FREE #CIRIA #SUDS GUIDANCE! Unbelievably in a country desperate to increase awareness and use of SuDS to solve surface water flooding, tomorrow Feb 1st a £25 charge will be applied to EACH PDF DOWNLOAD from www.ciria.org Including essential SuDS guidance and standards. Attendees of my past #raingarden talks, workshops for the Society of Garden Designers and Rain Garden UK training courses with ARK - Action for the River Kennet will have the below list of particularly useful #SuDS resources from CIRIA - DOWNLOAD TODAY WHILE THEY ARE STILL FREE from: https://lnkd.in/ePXcrygf * C753 The SuDS Manual, C768 Guidance on the construction of SuDS, C713 Retrofitting to Manage Surface Water, Using SuDS Close to Buildings, Health and Safety Principles for SuDS RP992 * Susdrain list more resources here: https://lnkd.in/eUm2ZSmV and others here: https://lnkd.in/ePPWyRYY I've communicated my feelings about this charge to CIRIA. Very small businesses, students, charities, community groups and homeowners are not the ones who should be charged a fee or membership in order to get SuDS information, standards and other guidance relating to Sustainable Drainage Systems, the implementation of which will protect our rivers and homes."

Great response from the state of Washington to pivot and increase funding for their grants based on overwhelming response. Some great statements in this release too, particularly this one. “Access to clean air, shade, and green spaces should be a basic human right, but the fact is that throughout our state, lower-income communities and communities of color more often live in neighborhoods with more concrete and asphalt, and too few trees,” said Commissioner of Public Lands Hilary Franz. “We need to bring the same urgency we brought to our wildfire crisis to our efforts to ensure everyone lives in neighborhoods with adequate tree canopy. Trees and tree equity are essential for our quality of life. As temperatures rise and economic disparities widen, trees are no longer a nice-to-have, they are a must-have.” https://lnkd.in/gVFZV3Kt
