I recently came across Alan Harrison's post, "The Mellon Foundation Did a Nice Thing. Next Time, Look at Where the Action Is." It sparked reflections on the state of philanthropy and the dynamics within the arts community. 🔹 It's evident that there's a tendency to gravitate towards established names and proven results (in the world of philanthropy). However, this often means smaller, innovative organizations miss out on much-needed support. We must recognize that every large organization started small, and the bootstrap mentality isn't always feasible when survival hinges on financial backing. 🔹 While the artistic elements of our organizations are vital, we can't ignore the pressing issues of our time. Arts organizations must be intersectional, addressing societal challenges like government, war, gun violence, and hate. As Atlanta's Out of Hand Theater realized, sometimes what a community truly needs is justice, not just another theater company. 🔹 I believe arts organizations should actively engage with and perform in the communities they serve. Why not take performances to local venues, festivals, or block parties? This fosters connections on the community's terms, moving beyond the notion of "build it, and they will come." 🔹 Scaling and sustainability are often discussed in broad terms, but what about thriving at the local level? There's immense value in being content with local impact and nurturing strong community ties. 🔹 We need to shift our support towards organizations where service work is integral, not just an add-on for funding purposes. Genuine community impact should drive our efforts, not just compliance with grant requirements. 🔹 Chris, a commenter, pointed out that grant-making processes often force organizations into a box, dictating programs and goals that may not align with their true mission, hindering genuine community engagement and innovation. Read Alan's post for more. #Arts #Culture #Philanthropy #Foundations #Leadership #Experimentation #Scale #Sustainability #Relevancy #AudienceEngagement #CommunityEngagement #Service #Education #Grantmaking #Intersectionality #Innovation

When a woman can’t see a future for herself, we need to understand why!! Research plays a pivotal role at Modern Widows Club because we deeply value every #widows perspective. Upon inquiring whether she harbored an “Interest in Your Future” prior to engaging with any MWC initiatives, her candid responses revealed a stark reality, albeit one we somewhat anticipated. It’s common for many widows to feel disconnected from their futures, a condition often exacerbated by #grief, which necessitates a period of slowing down to navigate and experience a range of emotions fully. However, upon re-evaluating their “Interest in Your Future” following the participation in an MWC #program, #community, or after accessing our #resources, the pivot was remarkable. Their honesty once again shone through, showcasing a significant positive change in their outlook towards the future, which filled us with immense joy and satisfaction. Such #feedback forms the cornerstone of what researchers term “comparable data,” a crucial benchmark for measuring the effectiveness and impact of our nonprofit’s mission. The initiation of this charity was rooted in such a purpose. The transformative feedback you’ve provided reaffirms our commitment and fuels our passion. Our singular goal is to offer comprehensive support, empowerment, and innovative programs designed to foster #hope, #healing, and personal #growth throughout your journey in #widowhood. In 2022, the Rozsa Foundation received feedback from our community suggesting that as a private foundation, we could play a significant role in advocating for increased government support for the arts sector. This resonated with our values and vision, leading us to allocate more resources to arts advocacy. We've been active in advocacy at all levels of government, from local to federal. We've joined initiatives like the Nonprofit Vote and the Canadian Arts Coalition, and we've invested in our own knowledge through professional development programs. Recently, there have been positive steps in Alberta, with the government announcing increases in funding for the arts. This is encouraging news. Moving forward, we plan to stay connected with relevant government ministries and continue advocating for the arts sector. Read more: https://lnkd.in/gA3jfNaC And don't forget, the dialogue series question for the week is: We want to hear from the community about what they think are important issues for government attention in the arts sector. What are your public policy priorities? Let your voice be heard! In case you missed out on what the 'Dialogue' series is, it is where we take a thought-provoking question or idea from our latest newsletter article and toss it out to our community, asking: 'What's your take? We invite you to dive in however you like! Share your thoughts by commenting, sending messages, recording audio clips, or emailing us —whatever suits you. 'Dialogue' is about your perspective on topics that impact the community. Your thoughts are the heartbeat of this series, so we encourage you to engage! . . . #rozsafoundation #artadvocacy #dialogue #art #artists #yycarts #alberta

Still buzzing after delivering last week's 'Intro to Community Organising' training to 13 people representing 7 community led initiatives that are part of, or connected to, the Connecting for Good Cov network. What a team Melissa Smith Leonie Schmid and myself make! We shared a whistle-stop tour of the 5 practices of Community Organising: Building Relationships, Creating Shared Story, Shared Structure, Strategy, and Taking Action. We discussed power and leadership, learnt some Greek, and even managed to squeeze in a discussion about our favourite local cheese tasting event... We invited people that we or our wider Grapevine Cov and Warks team are currently working with, who are actively working towards making systemic change in the city. Attendees represented : ⚡ Destination Ball Hill - a group of local people who want to make their area of the city a better, cleaner and more social place. 🌳 Coventry Urban Eden - working to create more community led green spaces in Coventry city centre 🖼 Creative Kindness - on the surface inclusive craft groups in many libraries across the city, below the surface an infrastructure for developing community leadership and breaking down barriers 📣 Coventry Youth Activists (CYA) - a youth led disability campaign group, working to end online discrimination. 💪 Act Up! - Challenging the norms in the mental health system through story and relationship. 🚽 Need the Loo campaign - a group of people campaigning for more public toilets in the city centre 🤝 Experts By Experience - a network of learning disabled and autistic people who influence local decision-making and have a say on new services and strategies that have or will have an impact on disabled people. I love being in the training space - delighted to be able to share our learning and experiences with community leaders and grow capacity to make lasting positive change across #coventry #Connectingforgoodcov #communityorganizing #communityorganising #LeadershipDevelopment #socialaction
