The latest Thomson Reuters 2024 Report on the State of the US Legal Market is, as always, an interesting insight into trends in the US legal market. But just because it works with data gathered from US firms doesn't mean that the rest of the world can dismiss or ignore its findings - especially around the topic of how generative AI might shape the future of the industry. #generativeAI #futurelaw #legalmarket

What do you think? Will generative AI lead to a future where clients take control and shift most of their legal work in-house, using outside counsel only for final validations? Or will the status quo prevail, with AI merely adding efficiencies and improvements to knowledge management, search functions and mundane diligence tasks, and a few changes in some job responsibilities? #AI #futurelaw

Partner to medium-sized law firms looking to improve client service & employee well-being| Digital Media Strategist | Former Practicing Attorney I DEI, LegalTech, & Innovation Evangelist | National Speaker & Author
"Automation, AI, and Gen AI indeed offer the promise of letting lawyers spend more time on their client’s pain points instead of their own." Did you catch Stephen Embry's article yesterday analyzing results of the Axiom/Wakefield Research survey of general counsels/in-house counsel focused heavily on their satisfaction with their outside counsel? Even taking a grain of salt that one of the world's largest flexible legal talent companies financed a survey finding corporate lawyers dissatisfied with their traditional source of legal support, the results are a little shocking. The survey showed clients' frustrations focused more on their experience working with outside counsel than the work product itself. Embry said many lawyers maintain they don’t "have the time to do the things that would make their clients happier." He concludes that they may be right -- but that "part of the cause for the lack of time for these lawyers is that they are spending too much time on things that they are over or not qualified to do." The tasks Embry says lawyers are focusing on preventing them from improving client service? "Billing. Drafting repetitive pleadings and correspondence. Time entry. Reading through and summarizing lengthy documents. Digesting nonlegal information. Summarizing transcripts. Creating new documents when existing ones could do. Cutting and pasting." He suggests automation, AI & generative AI could help lawyers perform those tasks more quickly to free up time to address clients' pain points. There's already lawyers saving tons of time by using generative AI to take the first pass at these tasks--our Thomson Reuters tool Co-Counsel among them. Read more of Embry's analysis and the survey results by clicking below. #generativeAI #AI #inhouse

‘The Kings Speech-Artificial Intelligence’. Mark Jones, Defence and Investigations expert at Payne Hicks Beach, comments feature in Ed Fennell's The Legal Diary, comments of the week. Mark comments “Many expected the King’s speech to introduce a new AI Bill, bringing the UK in line with Europe (the Artificial Intelligence Act), and a move away from the previous government’s reluctance to push for legal interventions where AI is concerned. Instead, we will have “appropriate legislation to place requirements on those working to develop the most powerful artificial intelligence models”. No detail given for now. This seems to echo what was in Labour’s manifesto regarding “the safe development and use of AI models by introducing binding regulation on the handful of companies developing the most powerful AI models.” In the AI world, where advances are made all the time, quite how the government will achieve this will remain to be seen.” Click here to read more : https://lnkd.in/e8NmPvV8 #AI #regulation #politics
