How it started ➡ How it's going Research has been part of our cancer center since the University of Rochester founded it back in 1974 - and even prior to that, as part of Strong Memorial Hospital. When our new cancer center building opened in 2008, it was important that it included both clinical and research space. These photos show part of Wilmot Cancer Center's third floor while under construction before opening and what the same space looks like today, filled with the latest equipment and the brightest minds working on cancer discoveries. Researchers on this floor are focused on many areas, from blood cancers to epigenetics to gynecologic oncology and more. Many researchers say working on a floor that is so close to clinical care motivates and inspires them. #WilmotFlashbackFriday

The B-cell atlas it out and we made the cover! It was great being part of this project. In this paper we show the interactions between intratumoral B cells with immune checkpoint blockade responses and build an interactive tool to explore B cell subsets
Very happy to share our recent publication in Cancer Cell! With colleagues from UCL Cancer Institute, we constructed a large pan-cancer single-cell RNA-sequencing atlas of intratumoral B cells, revealing associations with checkpoint inhibitor response and placing these findings in a spatial context. We were also fortunate enough to design the cover! Many thanks to all of my co-authors and to Cancer Research UK (CRUK) for supporting my PhD. https://lnkd.in/e3UbDt8p

I’m delighted to share that Cancer Grand Challenges have funded 5 new cancer research teams. Cancer Grand Challenges is a global funding initiative (co-founded by Cancer Research UK (CRUK) and the National Cancer Institute (NCI) in the US) to bring together a worldwide community of world-class research teams in pursuit of tackling some of the biggest questions in cancer research. The CGC teams are spread across 12 different countries, over 45 institutions and involve 67 investigators. The five teams – KOODAC, MATCHMAKERS, PROSPECT, PROTECT, and SAMBAI – will drive progress against four challenges – tumours in children and young people, T-cell receptors, cancer inequities, and early-onset cancers. #CancerGrandChallenges #CancerResearch https://cruk.ink/48HyGgg

Fantastic to read that The Mark Foundation for Cancer Research are partnering with Cancer Research UK (CRUK) to fund Cancer Grand Challenges. Cancer Grand Challenges is a global cancer research initiative that takes a bold approach to funding research - by uniting global research teams to tackle cancer’s most complex challenges. Cancer Grand Challenges is one of four fundraising priorities for our More Research, Less Cancer campaign. Thank you to The Mark Foundation for Cancer Research, who will be co-funding their third team with Cancer Research UK this year. Having this kind of partnership means that we can ask more questions that no one team or institution can tackle alone. Questions that if answered, could lead to a step-change in how we understand and treat cancer. https://lnkd.in/eet6RHX7 #moreresearchlesscancer #cancerresearchuk #cancergrandchallenges #philanthropymatters #researchimpact #foundations #trusts #privateclients

It's been 9 months since the first cancer researchers moved into the Paterson Building. The Paterson is home to the largest concentration of doctors, scientists and researchers in Europe. The 700-strong team are working on trials that cover everything from prevention and novel treatments to living with and beyond cancer. Their ambition is to improve patient outcomes and survival rates by doubling the number of people taking part in clinical trials by 2030. Watch the video to go behind the scenes with the people that work there. 👇 Cancer Research UK (CRUK)) Manchester Cancer Research Centre The University of Manchester #TheChristie #Cancer #CancerResearch #ClinicalTrials

🔬 A recent study from UCLA's Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center reveals promising results for using Manuka honey to help combat breast cancer. The research, conducted on mice, focused on estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer cells which comprise 70-80% of all cases. It found that Manuka honey could slow tumor growth by 84% without harming healthy cells. The research suggests that Manuka honey could complement existing treatments, potentially offering a natural, less toxic option for patients. While more research is needed to test its effectiveness in human clinical trials, these findings open up exciting possibilities for integrating Manuka honey into cancer care. Great to have Dr. Allie Grossmann as a member of the team and in the lab adjoining mine at the Earle A. Chiles Research Institute & Providence Cancer Institute. From our early discussions I believe there are many opportunities for us to collaborate. On this #WorldCancerResearchDay It is more clear than ever that we all need to work togetther to #FinishCancer. This includes #academics, #biotechs, #pharma, #regulators, & #investors from #VCs & #FamilyOffices. #cancer #immunotherapy
It’s World Cancer Research Day and we are thrilled to highlight the newest member of our #FINISHCANCER research team, Allie Grossmann M.D., Ph.D.! With an impressive background and a wealth of experience, Dr. Grossmann joins us as an associate member of the Earle A. Chiles Research Institute, the research arm of Providence Cancer Institute. Dr. Grossmann’s Cancer Signaling and Immunosuppressive Trafficking Laboratory will study tumor immunology from the tumor perspective, which can influence the effectiveness of cancer treatments and offer a fresh angle on cancer biology. We sat down to chat with Dr. Grossmann about her new lab, what inspired her to pursue a career in cancer research, and how she enjoys her downtime exploring the Pacific Northwest. As Breast Cancer Awareness Month unfolds, let's take a moment to reflect on the ongoing battle against breast cancer and the groundbreaking research being done in the field. At CellSave, we believe that the key to overcoming this disease may lie in the incredible potential of stem cells. Did you know that breast cancer stem cells have been identified as a potential driver of cancer development and metastasis? By understanding and targeting these cells, researchers hope to develop more effective treatments and improve patient outcomes. As we continue to make strides in the fight against breast cancer, let's also celebrate the resilience and strength of the women affected by this disease. Together, we can work towards a brighter, healthier future for all. #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth #StemCellResearch #WomenEmpowerment #CellSave #FightAgainstCancer

Tracking progress and gathering evidence are crucial steps to achieving WHO 90-70-90 targets when it comes to cervical cancer. But the shocking thing is that only 36% of women have been screened for cervical cancer at least once in their lifetime. It's important for us to encourage women to be more open to the idea of early screenings, for better prevention. #cervicalcancer #cancerawareness #cervicalcancerprevention #cancerspecialist #cancercare #womenhealth National Cancer Institute (NCI) Cancer Research Institute (CRI) NCI Division of Cancer Prevention NCI Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences

The IU Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center is taking on lung cancer from every angle. The Tom and Julie Wood Center for Lung Cancer Research was established in March 2024 with a $20 million gift from Julie Wood. The gift honors her late husband, Tom Wood, the well-known Indianapolis auto executive who died of lung cancer in 2010. The newly established center will expand efforts in basic science research to understand the complexities of lung cancer at a cellular level, guide the development of innovative lung cancer drugs, support early-phase clinical trials for IU-developed treatments, and expand the lung cancer precision genomics program.
