Seabed Warfare is a growing challenge for the defence forces around the world. Damage to the Nord Stream pipelines in September 2022 highlighted the need to protect undersea infrastructure, like internet services cables and energy pipelines. JOSPA's OR-CA platform aims to help deliver continuous deep-sea surveillance. Our platform can host sensors and communications systems required to monitor the sea, as it travels over large areas of the seas. Continuing on the topic of navigational aids, there is also AIS, or automatic identification system. This is a navigational aid that can significantly benefit new powerboat owners. AIS is a tracking system used on ships and by vessel traffic services for identifying and locating vessels by electronically exchanging data with other nearby ships, AIS base stations, and satellites. AIS transmits important information such as a vessel's identity, type, position, course, speed, navigational status, and other safety-related information to other vessels and shore stations. Is it time to consider offshore wind power as an enabler for a stronger total defense in the Baltic Sea? The wind turbines have a height and position that make them an ideal base for surveillance activities. Electricity and communication systems are in place. For example, the wind turbines could serve as a base for underwater drones that monitor our infrastructure. It's time we stop talking about conflicts of interest between offshore wind power and defense interests and start exploiting the synergies!
