Disclaimer: Lauryn Hill and group work triggers lol I remember going to a Lauryn hill concert in LA and being shocked at her behavior. She was late (of course), repeatedly berated the band, and kept starting songs over and over until the band "got it right." Some of the songs were even unrecognizable as she changed them completely. It only took one concert for me to never want to go to another of hers. But there are countless folks who continue to support her despite the almost guarantee that she will be late and/or cancel at the last minute. It seems the tide is turning as she's finally experiencing the consequences of her actions....and she still takes no responsibility and blames "sensationalism" (or what I like to call FACTS lol) I feel like I have worked with or for some Lauryn's in my life. Their behavior never changes, people are frustrated working with them, and yet they continue to thrive and even get promoted (hello higher ed). They tend to be oblivious of their behavior or don't care about its negative impact. Simply put, they are a liability to everyone including the company they work for. How many amazing staff members have left organizations because of this type of employee? How many folks have had to take on extra work because she's the group member you can't count on? While I don't like to see people fail, I do believe in the power of accountability. Because until we hold them accountable with real consequences, they will continue to be late, unreliable, have a negative impact on others, and hang on to that one great idea they had years ago that (while iconic) isn't enough to make others endure all of the frustration that comes with giving them opportunities they no longer deserve. https://lnkd.in/gRMH_yPG

What is the #travelretail story? What are we REALLY selling? We are not selling gifts, self treats or restocking. We are not selling products. We are selling more than that. That is what we need to tap into. Last night I stumbled upon this video. Powerful stuff. Jeremy Renner had a bit of a run in with a snow plow leaving him with 38 broken bones, a sliced liver, an eye popped out and a popped lung. Yet, despite all odds…. He is running. For him, Brooks trainers were a symbol of hope. Hope led to a new perspective… a realisation that a change in perspective is the real superpower. Adversity is fuel. A product is a vehicle that carries intent. A bottle of whisky might be a gift but its intent can be so much more. It could be a celebration, gratitude, reconciliation or just an opportunity to share stories over a dram. A bottle of perfume can be a lift in mood, a statement, an act to attract or wanting to be part of the brand lifestyle. If retailers want to be a brand in our channel, one of luxury, it needs to tell a story…. Otherwise it is a 7-Eleven, a blurred store on the travellers journey. As for Brooks, I will certainly consider them for my next pair. A trainer is a trainer at the end of the day but, I like the values it has shared in this story. #dutyfree could do worse than borrowing their slogan… let’s run there.
