I am pleased to share that our Customer, The Scottish Government and Mitie staff based in St Andrews House in Edinburgh won Best Performing Tech Donation Box in the Hosting Category with The Edinburgh Remakery! Through donations of technology the amazing team at The Edinburgh Remakery managed to save 390 devices! Instead of the constant cycle of consuming and discarding, the Edinburgh Remakery advocate for a circular economy - a cycle where, instead of being thrown away, items are passed on, repaired, refurbished, or reused before being recycled. By donating our old tech the skilled team were about to repair and refurbish what they could before passing it on to be reused. Anything they cannot repair are used to repair other items or responsibility recycled. Bridge42 had the pleasure of meeting Samuel Thomas of Sam's Spares when he recently came into our Perth office to collect donated laptops, keyboards, mice, chargers and docking stations. Samuel (Sam) co-founded Sam’s Spares in 2022, a not-for-profit organisation saving unwanted electronic waste from landfill, to fulfil his passion for community, environment and electronics. In today's tech-driven world, the sheer amount of e-waste is increasing at an alarming rate. However, not all e-waste is garbage and many discarded devices still have life left in them. Sam repairs and refurbishes desktop computers, laptops, tablets, mobile phones, gaming systems and other electronics. These items are subsequently repurposed and distributed – free of charge – through the Sam’s Spares peer-partner network of not-for-profit, community and charitable organisations. Sam, who is autistic and has Tourette syndrome, strives to dispel the stigmas and limitations put upon the neurodivergent community, proving that anyone with a passion and purpose can succeed. A truly inspiring individual, Sam was named Volunteering WA’s 2023 Young Volunteer of the Year and the City of Gosnells’ 2023 Community Citizen of the Year – Youth. Sam was also a 2024 Australian of the Year Awards finalist in the Young Australian of the Year category for Western Australia, through the Auspire - Australia Day Council WA.
