Fascinating article in Vineyard Magazine by Stephen Skelton regarding the inevitable rise of land prices in Kent and the Southeast due to its suitability for planting premium vineyards. Another tick for Kent Vineyards, especially considering how close they are to London, accessing a rich tourism market. https://lnkd.in/ez2hSsj5 #landprices #kentvineyards #winetourism #southeast

Nestled in the heart of the Mt Ventoux Natural Park (Parc naturel régional du Mont-Ventoux) and UNESCO biosphere, the Southern Rhone Ventoux viticultural district or Les vins AOC Ventoux as it is known to the French, is one of the fastest rising star in the French viticultural nebula thanks to its sustainable and regenerative focus, its uncommon altitude and unspoilt natural environment. Wolves were even spotted last winter at its northern boundaries in the legendary “Dentelles de Montmirail “ cliff formations. Keep in mind that the trade surplus recorded by the French Wine & Spirit sector in 2023 matched the deficit of its auto sector: € 20 Bln. Tourism is already France’s #1 economic sector… whilst the weight of its industrial sector as a share of GDP is the smallest in Europe (9%)… Chêne Bleu Wines #regenerativeviticulture #finewines

Today Julia Harding writes on Viúva Gomes bringing life back to the sands of Colares, Europe's most westerly vineyards. 'Planting a vineyard is a long-term venture. Or perhaps I should say adventure. A massive investment and no return for at least three years and possibly a lot longer, and, like all farming, even more precarious in a period of climate extremes and unpredictability. Nowhere more so than in Colares on the Atlantic coast of Portugal about 40 km (25 miles) north-west of Lisbon, shown on the World Atlas of Wine map of Lisbon and the Setúbal Peninsula. As Simon Woolf and Ryan Opaz point out in their book 'Foot Trodden: Portugal and the wines that time forgot', Cabo de Roca in the far south-west of the Colares wine region is the westernmost point of mainland Europe, and the windiest. As the photos below show, planting here requires traditional wisdom and skills, courage, a lot of hard work, and a bulldozer. Today the Colares vineyards, like those in parts of the Sierras de Málaga, compete with the real-estate demands of tourism.' https://lnkd.in/g5aVAiWD

The oldest finds of wine production have been found along the east shores of the Black Sea and dates back 8000 years. Since then, the Egyptians, Greeks and Romans have passed the gift of wine making further and further west in Europe, to present day. Nowadays, wine is produced indoors, and an indoor space can be seen as “a controlled environment” – separated from nature’s alterations and key for making success. However, producing wine inside puts firm requirements on the indoor climate. In our latest blog, our expert, Luca Zordan, Managing Director Swegon Italy, explains what an optimal indoor climate solution for a winery can look like. Read the blog here: https://hubs.ly/Q02nyX_p0

Chile, the land of rich viticultural heritage, is seeing a resurgence in its ancient vineyards, spearheaded by Max Morales, CEO of #AndesWines and its innovative #AncestralVineyards Wine Tours by AndesWines.com This concept is set to revolutionise the wine networking and business platform of Andes Wines, drawing from the extensive 23-year research journey of CEO Maximiliano Morales. Covering over 4,000 kilometres from Arica Parinacota to Patagonia, Morales has meticulously mapped the country’s oldest vineyards, originally brought across by European settlers. At the forefront of this initiative is the ‘ #ClimateChangeWineTour ’ which positions Chile as a global leader boasting the most extensive ungrafted, phylloxera-free vineyards. These tours invite enthusiasts to explore terroirs showcasing ancient vines, including Cabernet Sauvignon vines aged 40 to 140 years in Maule, Bio Bio and Maipo, together with Carmenere planted in 1945 in the O'Higgins region and Alto Jahuel in the Maipo Valley. One of the highlights of these explorations includes a visit to a mountain vineyard near Portillo (ski resort), over 1,600 metres above sea level, producing Cornisa Syrah-Malbec from Viña El Escorial in the Aconcagua Valley. A Historical Perspective: Wine in Chile Chile's winemaking history dates back to 1551, when Spanish immigrants brought the País grape, Listán Prieto from the Canaries, to the region through Peru. This variety, taking on different names across the Americas including ‘Mission grape’ in the US, was planted in La Serena, Coquimbo and even in the oases of the Atacama Desert. Later, French immigrants arrived, bringing with them varieties such as Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc, especially in areas like San Rosendo at the Bio Bio-Laja River junction. Here, micro-vineyards of these varieties continue to produce exceptional wines from 140-year-old vines. Recent discoveries include Portuguese grape varieties in the Bio Bio region’s Millapoa sector and Bonarda vines near Puerto Varas in the southern-based Puelo Valley, indicating a thriving adaptation to the local climate. Morales' close involvement as Manager of the Innovation Agency of Government, supported by the Ministry of Agriculture via the Nodo Estrategico Chile Vitivinícola 2.0 highlights the significance of old vineyards, climate change adaptation and the consequent innovative marketing strategies behind these rescue missions. Projects span over 4,000 kilometres from the Codpa Valley in Arica Parinacota to experimental vineyards in Chile Chico. #Phylloxera #Terroirs hashtag #OldVineyards #AncestralVarieties Read: https://lnkd.in/e8sVZpyg Related news about #WineInnovaTech the leading #WineTech event that is pushing to create a Wine Private Fund: https://lnkd.in/eSzpYzs4

Challenge for Spanish winegrowing Recently, northern Spain experienced a new challenge, such as very extreme weather for Spanish winegrowing. Hailstones as big as ping-pong balls fell from the sky and caused major damage in DO Bierzo and DO Valdeorras. Earlier, Spanish Catalonia also experienced extreme weather with disastrous consequences for winegrowing. Challenge for Spanish winegrowing Source: Demencia Wines On 25 June, a storm hit the area around Valtuille de Abajo. Approximately 500 to 600 hectares of the best located vineyards of DO Bierzo were hit by hailstones. As a result, grapes were crushed, leaves were torn off vines and even canes and permanent wood were damaged. This is the second hailstorm for the region. On 18 June, another storm passed over nearby Cacabelos, affecting approximately 250 hectares of vineyards around the town. The event also affected the nearby province of Ourense, wiping out vineyards in DO Valdeorras. __ Preserving old vines Another major challenge is also being faced by Spanish wine growing in the northeast. As part of an EU programme to restructure vineyards, the Spanish government and local authorities want to replace old vines with more productive vines. Now, there is a deeper problem lurking beneath this. In DO Bierzo, many vineyards are owned by small families. Read the full articles here https://lnkd.in/e4-SNpfU

Pre-Vintage Tip 4: Visitor management: Are all visitors being logged and signed in correctly? This is critical as winery staff check grapes in the lead-up to harvest, travelling from vineyard to vineyard, and region to region. Note: state to state and country to country movement is discouraged. Click here for a visitor template: https://lnkd.in/geB_3-pf #vinehealth
