As of right now, December 6, 2023, the flood situation in Chennai has improved significantly. The heavy rains associated with Cyclone Michaung have subsided, and the waterlogging in most parts of the city has receded. However, some low-lying areas are still waterlogged, and the authorities are working to drain the excess water.
Here are some of the latest updates on the Chennai flood situation:
The water level in the Chembarambakkam reservoir, which supplies water to Chennai, has come down to 24.4 ft, which is below the danger level of 25 ft.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) are continuing their rescue and relief operations in the affected areas.
The Chennai Corporation is providing food and shelter to the people who have been displaced from their homes due to the floods.

Cyclone Michaung made an impact in Chennai on Tuesday, bringing heavy rains. Despite the decreased intensity, the rain continued to fall, bringing the state capital to a halt.
The storm-induced floods tragically resulted in injuries and property destruction, with the Greater Chennai police reporting 17 deaths in different incidences.
In response, Tamil Nadu has immediately requested emergency aid from the central government in the amount of Rs 5,060 crore to remedy the significant damage caused by Cyclone Michaung. A full survey is being conducted to analyze the overall impact, with more expenditures planned.
District Disaster Response Teams (DDRT) have been actively involved in relief activities across rain-affected areas in the face of adversity. Stories like the rescue of 54 households in Muthialpet and the relocation of a new mother from Saligramam are heartwarming. Over 250 people from low-income neighborhoods have sought safety in a school camp, demonstrating the community's resiliency.
Let us join hands to help one another as we traverse these difficult times. We can make a difference if we work together. Let's unite to rescue and help those in danger.
Bangladesh recently witnessed temperatures of 42°C, followed by Cyclone Remal, and subsequent floods. The cyclone caused prolonged precipitation and widespread destruction, with floods submerging areas and disrupting livelihoods across 19 districts.
As part of The Zurich Flood Resilience Alliance, Practical Action works in the districts of Satkhira, Khulna and Faridpur to improve resilience for those most vulnerable.
The Disaster Alert for BD app, developed and launched by Practical Action and the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief in 2020, enabled 3000 volunteers from the Cyclone Preparedness Programme to disseminate disaster information about Cyclone Remal to communities. As a result, Practical Action was able to reach 72,000 households through voice messages about cyclone warnings.

At least 106 people have been killed and dozens are still feared trapped after heavy rains triggered massive landslides in the southern Indian state of Kerala. As per figures released by the state government, 98 people have gone missing due to the landslides.
The landslides struck hilly areas in Wayanad district in the early hours of Tuesday, 30th July 2024.
Rescue operations are under way, but are being hindered by heavy rains and the collapse of a crucial bridge.
The landslides are the worst disaster to hit Kerala since 2018, when deadly floods killed more than 400 people.
Officials say more than 200 army personnel have been deployed to assist security forces in search and rescue efforts.
Local hospitals are treating at least 123 injured, and more than 3,000 people have been rescued and moved to 45 relief camps.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a significant weather alert for Pakistan. Predictive modeling indicates intense cloud bursts from the eastern Indian side, which could lead to moderate to heavy rainfall in the upper catchments of major rivers, including Sutlej, Ravi, and Chenab, starting from July 2, 2024. Along with this, there is a warning for lightning in South and Central Punjab and Islamabad from July 5-7. This weather event may cause rapid rises in water levels, flash flooding, and urban flooding. The NDMA advises the public to stay vigilant, follow local authority instructions, and download the ‘Pak NDMA Disaster Alert’ app for updates.

Vijayawada Floods: Worst in Two Decades Leave 40% of the City Submerged, Government Steps Up Support
Vijayawada faces severe floods with over 40% of the city underwater, affecting 2.76 lakh people. Torrential rains caused by a low-pressure system have led to rivers Krishna and Budameru breaching their banks, flooding even previously unaffected areas.
The government actively provides support, with emergency teams working tirelessly on rescue and relief efforts. Authorities are evacuating people, providing shelters, and distributing essential supplies like food, water, and medical aid.
Stay safe, follow official updates, and support each other during this crisis.

**Chooral Mala**, a place in the Wayanad district of Kerala, India, has recently faced a devastating natural disaster. A series of severe landslides struck Chooral Mala, along with Meppadi and Mundakkai Town, resulting in significant loss of life.
The disaster has left approximately 400 families stranded due to a bridge collapse, making the sole access point to Attamala in Mundakkai impassable. Rescue efforts have been impeded, and vehicles were swept away in the chaos.
The journey to Chooral Mala is breathtaking, surrounded by tea gardens and beautiful mountains. You can enjoy a 12 km journey through tea plantations and a 4 km off-road safari. However, it's essential to note that the massive landslide occurred in the nearby location of Puthumala-Wayanad.
In the aftermath of this tragedy, rescue operations are underway, with teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Fireforce, and the Kannur Defence Security Corps mobilized to assist. The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority has also set up helpline numbers for urgent assistance: 9656938689 or 8086010833.
Let us hope for strength, resilience, and support during these challenging times, as communities come together to recover and rebuild. 🙏🌿💔
#Bangladesh evacuates hundreds of thousands as a severe cyclone approaches from the Bay of Bengal - from The Associated Press:
Bangladesh evacuated nearly 800,000 people from vulnerable areas on Sunday as the country and neighboring India awaited the arrival of a severe cyclone that has formed over the Bay of Bengal.
The storm is expected to cross Bangladesh and India’s West Bengal coasts around midnight Sunday. The India Meteorological Department said it is expected to reach maximum wind speeds of up to 120 kilometers per hour (75 mph), with gusts up to 135 kph (85 mph) hitting West Bengal’s Sagar Island and Bangladesh’s Khepupara region on Sunday night.
Bangladesh’s junior minister for disaster management and relief, Mohibur Rahman, said volunteers have been deployed to evacuate people to 4,000 cyclone shelters across the country’s coastal region. The government also closed all schools in the region until further notice.
India’s Kolkata airport will be closed for 21 hours from midnight Sunday. Bangladesh shut down the airport in the southeastern city of Chattogram and canceled all domestic flights to and from Cox’s Bazar.
Bangladeshi authorities also suspended loading and unloading in the country’s largest main seaport in Chittagong and started moving more than a dozen ships from the jetties to the deep sea as a precaution.
This is the first cyclone in the Bay of Bengal ahead of this year’s monsoon season, which runs from June to September.
Moderate to heavy rainfall is expected in most places over coastal districts in India’s West Bengal state. A storm surge about 1 meter (3.1 feet) high is expected to flood low-lying areas of coastal West Bengal and Bangladesh.

#Bihar is disaster prone state, with its capital Patna witnessing hazards like earthquakes, lightning, heatwave, cold wave, as well as local disasters like fire, road mishaps, snake bite, dog bite, etc. Needless to say, that responding in case of emergency and applying Disaster Risk Reduction measures in slum areas proves to be a tall order due to poor financial conditions of the community members. Initiating the BMZ Global Program in the 10 intervention villages of Patna Municipal Corporation and Sampatchak Nagarparishad areas posed significant challenges in organizing slum areas. To address this, a dedicated team of girls from the Patna-based organization was groomed to proactively mitigate risks and foster resilience in the community. In response to the situation, Caritas India through its partner established the Gargi Girls Groups (G3), composed of 60 dedicated community-based taskforce members, with a focus on providing basic education and 21st-century life skills. The majority of Gargi Girls Group members are high school dropouts from marginalized communities. They received training from the Global Program on Early Warning, First Aid, and Search and Rescue. Subsequently, the Bihar State Disaster Management Authority (BSDMA) certified these girls after a rigorous 7-day training session, collaboratively designed and implemented by BSDMA, SDRF, and Yuganter. In an effort to address their economic challenges, sustainable livelihood training in stitching and embroidery skills was provided to empower these girls and integrate them into the program. Global program facilitated stitching and embroidery training to a total of 60 Gargi Girls Group members. In this drive, experts of the Usha Pvt Ltd imparted pros and cons of the aforesaid skill development training to them. The trainers also visited villages like Dusadhi Pakari and Khairatali Nahar of Patna Municipal Corporation and Sampatchak Nagarparishad respectively to impart training to the participants. Interestingly, all the members happen to be the active members of Taskforce Committees. Out of which, 10 members have become master trainers who are supposed to impart stitching training voluntarily to the fellow girls in their respective localities. Many girls started to work at nearby boutiques, while some of them engrossed into encrypting beautiful designs on the cloths on their own houses. Apart from it, they were equipped with android phones to provide them basic education and 21st century life skills. Now, the Gargi Girls Group members are in position to make their both ends meet on their own and at the same time they are quick to respond in case of emergency, thanks to BMZ Global Program.
