Part 2.....the story continues The nursing profession in South Africa faces a critical juncture, with a dwindling pool of specialized nurses in crucial areas like NICU, ICU,Emergency Care, Theatre and Midwifery. Nurses are leaving for better opportunities abroad, driven by unreasonable workplace pressures and increasing non-patient-centric tasks. As the country grapples with implementing National Health Insurance, the stark reality looms – without addressing staffing challenges, the healthcare system's future is uncertain. It's time for South African nurses to reclaim their profession and unite their voices for a transformative shift. Organizations like DENOSA and SANC must reconnect with the realities of modern nursing practice to empower and reward a strong nursing workforce. Have been working hard to increase the number of college places for various healthcare disciplines. We have much more to do but those leaving school today have many more places available to them than they did 4/5 years ago. Take medicine, there were 1,115 new enrolments in 2019/2020. This year we will have 1,475 places available - an increase of 32%. Here are a few other examples over the same time period. 👉 Nursing and Midwifery: from 1,735 to 2,390 = up 38% 👉 Occupational Therapy: from 135 to 189 = up 40% 👉 Physiotherapy: from 180 to 216 = up 20% 👉 Dietetics/Nutrition: from 85 to 120 = up 41% There are plenty of other examples and we have agreed further increases in the number of college places available for these - and other disciplines - in 2025/26. I am acutely aware that there are also a number of disciplines where we need to do a lot better, including radiography, radiation therapy and psychology (PhD). Determined to ensure more progress in these areas and will ensure the Department of Health works with the Department of Further & Higher Education to support and deliver this.

It has been double-blind peer reviewed.   The ability to assess vital signs manually falls within the Nursing and Midwifery Council’s standards of proficiency for registered nurses and nursing associates. Palpating peripheral and central pulses is one of the underlying principles of the A–E approach to patient assessment. The aim of pulse assessment is to ascertain the pulse rate, rhythm and strength (sometimes referred to as amplitude, quality, volume or character). In clinical practice, taking the pulse is used to assess the effects of disease and response to therapy such as medication.   This fully illustrated guide describes:   ·      How to take the radial pulse; ·      Assessing the quality or character of the pulse; ·      Documenting and interpreting the findings; ·      The factors that can affect the pulse rate; ·      Using capillary refill time to assess peripheral perfusion; ·      Assessing the heart rate via the apex beat; ·      The assessment of the pulse using additional pulse sites.   A competency checklist accompanies this guide.
