Mike knew he needed help—immediately. OCD had taken over his life with fears of a serious illness, leaving him exhausted, isolated, and desperate for help. But he had a huge problem: exposure and response prevention (ERP) therapy, the life-changing treatment he needed, was well out of his budget. Mike isn’t alone in this struggle. Obstacles like the ones he experienced keep many people from getting the specialized treatment they need. That’s why at NOCD, we work hard to partner with insurance providers so people who are suffering can get life-saving care without the overwhelming expense. Today, we have the widest coverage available for OCD, making ERP therapy affordable and accessible for over 2 in 3 Americans with commercial insurance. This is a game-changer for Mike: Now, thanks to getting affordable treatment covered by his insurance at NOCD, OCD is no longer in control of his life—he is. 📖 Read more about how Mike finally got the treatment he needed: https://lnkd.in/gqz9m8bM

Ah yes, nothing says 'let's prioritize patient care' like forcing people to stop therapy because insurers are too busy playing detective with pre-payment reviews. What could go wrong when health insurance companies decide whether your mental health is worth their time and money? It’s almost like they forgot that delayed care can often cost more in the long run. Living at Home After a Stroke Thanks to advances in medicine, most people survive a stroke. Stroke survivors do face challenges when coming home, but most can return and resume their activities. We have a client in Thornton that recently returned home after a stroke. We are helping her around the house as she gets stronger and continues her recovery. Many stroke survivors are discharged from the hospital sooner than they or their families would like. That is an unfortunate side effect of our health insurance system. Home care from Assisting Hands can help bridge the gap and ensure that clients can successfully recover and thrive in their own homes. Assisting Hands has put together a checklist of factors to consider before discharging a stroke patient home. We share this with hospitals and other health care providers in the North Metro Denver area, but it’s good for families to see as well. If a loved one has suffered a stroke, here are some things to think about: · Can they bathe and dress themselves safely? · Can they cook and feed themselves? · Can they keep up with the house cleaning and maintenance? · Can they move around without risk of falling? · Do they understand my medication regime and discharge instructions? · Can they take their medications as prescribed? · Do they have someone available who is willing to help when needed? Assisting Hands can help with all of these and more. Contact us to discuss or to schedule a free consultation.

All cool and exotic…until you mess up and miss a possible lesion in the brain. A case where ‘a little knowledge is a dangerous thing’. I totally understand the need to set yourself apart with other skills and courses. One that seems to be trending lately is eyes. To fully know eyes and the vision system? Takes a minimum of 3 years- full time degree level and higher. There’s a reason for this…the depth of knowledge and thousands of hours of clinical experience in full time clinic with real patients. That cannot be matched from an online webinar or a few weekend courses. A client booked in on the recommendation from their therapist as the client was unable to do any of the eye exercises they gave them to help for their lower back issue. Ran through an eye screening assessment and it was obvious there was something sinister at play. Appeared to be a brainstem lesion and one that if I would swerve this type of case? It’s definitely out the paygrade of someone who did a weekend course. Got the client to contact their GP to be seen urgently by an eye consultant. When looking to the side, one of their eyes does not move past the middle (looking straight ahead). No pain, no tightness. Just inability to move the eye. Saw consultant the next day and had a priority scan and a lesion in their brainstem was confirmed. (The lesion impacts the signals between two different nerves in the brainstem that control sideways eye movements). Not the news they wanted to hear but they are in the system and very fortunate their partners work has a very comprehensive private health insurance which means they get the appropriate care. The lack of detail from an online webinar alongside zero clinical experience meant the client didn’t get accurate testing techniques and the depth of knowledge which could have saved them time and get referred on sooner. There’s no shortcuts for certain sets of skills. If a skillset sounds like its more medical or requires qualifications? Check. (There's only 3 full time legit routes for eyes)

This is just unacceptable! We have invested in training for our mental health careers and clients benefit from our education investments. These companies should be ashamed. Consumers lose when they cannot use insurance. As an equity committed professional, I have always used sliding scale, insurance, & pro bono to enable all humans to access mental health services#healthequity#therapists#insurance

Another example of why many therapists choose not to panel in-network with insurance companies, electing instead to be out-of-network and private pay providers. I dipped my toe in the insurance panel water with Aetna through Alma in June. I will take it back out come January. Situations like this offer prospective clients insight into why. | 2 Digital Mental Health Platforms Cut Pay Rates for Therapists with United Health’s Optum, Stirring Anger | #insurance #therapy #blackintherapy #blackwomensmentalhealth

About 4 in 10 Americans plan to speak to a therapist or mental health professional this year*, but they may not follow through because of affordability concerns. When people don’t know they can access therapy or psychiatry covered by their insurance plans, it prevents them from receiving needed care. That’s why “Check Your Coverage Day” on Tuesday, January 21st is important. Talkspace has worked with top health plans and Medicare to grow our in-network coverage, and we hope this new annual event prompts people to address their mental health needs by checking their insurance coverage and finding an in-network provider (through Talkspace or elsewhere). Connecting with a therapist in January is one way to start the year with more peace of mind. (*Source: National Today) #NationalCheckYourCoverageDay #MentalHealth #Therapy
