NEW EPISODE FROM THE FAST ARCHIVES MINISERIES In this episode of The FAST Archives miniseries on the FlightBridgeED Podcast, we're replaying Geoff Murphy's talk from a previous FAST event, "Paramedics: The Master Multitasker... Right?" In this captivating talk, Geoff, from Master Your Medics, delves into the challenge paramedics (as well as nurses, physicians, and other medical professionals) face in multitasking, especially when they're often the most experienced provider. How well do we juggle life-saving skills while making critical decisions? And is multitasking always in the best interest of our patients? Through a personal story and insightful research, Geoff challenges our assumptions and invites us to consider the potential risks and rewards of multitasking in pre-hospital, critical care, and emergency medicine. Labor shortages among healthcare professionals have become a growing concern. The pandemic exacerbated the problem as physicians, nurses and other healthcare workers suffered from increased levels of burnout and last year showed a decrease in enrollment in medical schools and nursing programs. Listen to this episode of the Pharma Council FutureHealth podcast from The Advertising Research Foundation (ARF) to hear Kantar’s Don Abraham discuss what these trends mean for the healthcare industry and what they could lead to in the future:

This edition of EMS One-Stop was recorded in New Orleans at the 2023 EMS World - Emergency Medical Services Expo. I was excited to be joined by a range of guests who discuss the sessions they presented and the latest developments in clinical medicine. Alexia Bratiotis Jobson, APR, NREMT director of public relations at REMSA Health, discusses top tips for dealing with the media, and she then interviews media pre-con student Katherine Katherine Robillard Peter Antevy MD (Handtevy - Pediatric Emergency Standards, Inc.) describes his conference session, titled “Five protocol changes you're too afraid to make.” Brian Maloney of Plum Plum EMS in Pennsylvania, talks culture of safety, and lights and sirens reduction (and their results within the NEMSQA L&S reduction program). Douglas Wolfberg Esq., of PWW Advisory Group steps in to discuss leadership lessons from the Beatles and his new book – "Beatles FAB but True." The episode concludes with veteran EMS podcasters Christopher Montera and Anne Montera, MHL, BSN, RN who offer tips on the art of podcasting. Names dropped: National EMS Quality Alliance Skip Kirkwood, MS, JD, NRP (Ret.) Mike Taigman My thanks to Mark Davenport and Prodigy EMS for recording and post production. Video version to follow. TOP QUOTES FROM THIS EPISODE “‘No comment is a comment!’ So you really want to avoid that as part of your media strategy and work to develop some transparent and honest information when those tough questions come.” — Alexia Jobson “Anything that you say to a reporter is considered on the record and can be used in a news story.” — Alexia Jobson “Top tips for going on camera: You want to make sure that they are knowledgeable about what they are going to be talking about, you want them to be a willing participant and able to re-frame and be positive about the content they are going to cover.” — Alexia Jobson “It's important for you to just spend a little time looking inside your organization, recognize those important stories that you want to share, and then make sure that you commit some time and resources to building those relationships with your audiences ... having that positive relationship in place will go a long way. And it's also important as a profession that we work together to kind of raise the profile of out of hospital healthcare and EMS.” — Alexia Jobson “Getting out the door, our shoot time is the No. 1 thing that can decrease our response times. It's not driving lights and sirens; it's not driving recklessly or speeding or not obeying the laws ... it's getting out that door quick from the time of dispatch to the time our truck's pulling out of the garage.” — Brian Maloney https://lnkd.in/e5MAfTTE

Great perspective for the morning commute! I think this sparks an interesting conversation, but I’m curious how we take this discussion and transform it into actionable tasks. What vehicle do EMS agencies use to report performance metrics to municipal and governmental authorities? Between the two agencies I work with I report to 13 different municipalities and each has wildly different expectations. Some want detailed granular data monthly, some just want a screenshot of ESO call summary statistics, some don’t want anything at all. I appreciated the .csv template that accompanied the position statement, but I’m curious if there is an appetite for some sort of standardized benchmark dashboard. I’m not a data scientist by any means, but I know enough about Power-Bi and Google data studios to be dangerous. If there was a “best practice” what would it look like?
After the release of Joint Position Statement on EMS Performance Measures – Beyond Response Times published I got a reaction and comment from Matt Zavadsky, vice president of PWW Advisory Group, and one of the primary authors of the position statement. Click here for the paper: https://lnkd.in/gUxCu5cq We discuss the statement in detail, examining all of the recommended metrics, the reasons for placing them in the paper and why response times are not recommended as a primary measure of system performance. We discussed the signatories of the statement – in particular, the sign off from the International City/County Managers Association (ICMA) and the pivotal role they play in ensuring EMS delivery in their communities. The many associations that joined the statement recommend that communities and governments modernize EMS performance assessments by evaluating various domains with key performance indicators (KPIs). These KPIs should be measured, tracked over time, benchmarked against similar EMS systems or national data and regularly published for local community stakeholders. https://lnkd.in/gXCQ-maZ Video version is in the first comment below. The organizations joining the statement are: Academy of International Mobile Healthcare Integration American Ambulance Association American College of Emergency Physicians American College of Surgeons – Committee on Trauma American Paramedic Association Center for Patient Safety International Academies of Emergency Dispatch International Association of EMS Chiefs (IAEMSC) ICMA - International City/County Management Association National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians National Association of State EMS Officials (NASEMSO) National EMS Management Association (NEMSMA) National EMS Quality Alliance National Volunteer Fire Council Paramedic Chiefs of Canada
