Today marks the start of National School Bus Safety Week, and DPS wants to remind all drivers to take extra precautions behind the wheel when school buses are near. 🚌 Reduce your speed when you spot a school bus and know children may unexpectedly step into the road without checking for oncoming traffic. 🚌 Be careful around railroad crossings. School buses are legally required to stop at them. 🚌 Know the laws regarding school buses. According to Texas law, if a bus has alternating flashing red signals visible from the front or rear, drivers MUST stop before reaching the bus. Drivers can only proceed if the flashing lights are no longer activated, the driver signals you to proceed or the bus has resumed driving. 🚌 Drivers who illegally pass a school bus face fines up to $1,250 for the first offense. Please do your part to help ensure students get to-and-from school safely. #NationalSchoolBusSafetyWeek

School bus safety is important all year long ― and it’s up to all Texas drivers to make sure they’re following the speed limit and obeying traffic laws in school zones. Sgt. Clark is here today to share important safety tips for everyone to follow. As a reminder, according to Texas law, if a bus has alternating flashing red signals visible from the front or rear, drivers MUST stop before reaching the bus. Drivers can only proceed if the flashing lights are no longer activated, the driver signals you to proceed or the bus has resumed driving. Approaching drivers do NOT have to stop for a school bus that is operating a visual signal if the road is separated by a physical barrier or an intervening space. If a highway is only divided by a left-turn lane, it is not considered divided, and drivers must stop for school buses. 🎥 Courtesy of DPS' Southeast Texas Region #SchoolBusSafety

However, while the laws for sharing the road with school busses are mostly consistent throughout the country, it is important to familiarize yourself with what your state specifically outlines: https://lnkd.in/ezgi-rFT #KeepSafetyOnTRACK #BackToSchool #SchoolBusSafety

Greetings all, As children head back to school, prioritizing their safety is paramount. The diagram shared underscores the critical need to be vigilant around school buses, especially in the red danger zones. These zones pose significant risks due to low driver visibility, urging students to exercise caution and maintain a safe distance of 3 meters in all directions. A designated "safe zone" for boarding and alighting further enhances safety protocols. Beyond bus safety, back-to-school measures encompass educating children on traffic rules, pedestrian safety, and appropriate behavior in various settings. Collaboration among parents, teachers, and bus drivers is key in reinforcing these practices, ensuring a secure journey for all. #BackToSchoolSafety #ChildSafety #SchoolTransportation #2024

As students head back to school, it’s crucial to remember that school zones and bus stops are high-risk areas for young pedestrians. From 2013 to 2022, over half (51%) of school-age pedestrians killed in school-transportation-related traffic crashes were struck by school buses or vehicles functioning as buses. The rest (49%) were hit by other vehicles. Even more alarming, 1 in 5 of these incidents involved school transportation vehicles going straight. 🚦 Stay Alert in School Zones: Stop before the white line at stop signs and traffic lights to avoid blocking crosswalks. Pay attention to crossing guards and follow their hand signals. 🚍 Bus Safety: Always stop 20+ feet away when a bus activates its red lights—vehicles in both directions must stop unless there’s a median. Don’t proceed until the bus moves again. Help us reduce these tragic accidents by exercising extra caution near schools and buses. Together, we can keep our roads safe for everyone!

As our kids head back to school for most of Central Florida including Seminole County. Drivers please pay extra attention to lower speed limits, watch for and obey signals from school crossing guards and to only drive or park in authorized areas to pick up or drop off kids at school. Motorists are required to stop when approaching a school bus that is stopped with its red lights flashing and STOP arms extended. Other rules about navigating areas near school buses include: On two-lane roads, all drivers moving in either direction on a two-way street must stop for a school bus displaying a stop signal, and must remain stopped until the road is clear of children and the school bus stop arm is withdrawn. On a highway divided by a paved median, all drivers moving in either direction must stop for a school bus displaying a stop signal and must remain stopped until the road is clear of children and the school bus stop arm is withdrawn. Divided highways, where there is a raised barrier such as a concrete divider or at least 5 feet of unpaved space separating the lanes of traffic, are the only roadways where traffic approaching an oncoming school bus does not need to stop. On a highway divided by a raised barrier or an unpaved median at least 5 feet wide, drivers moving in the opposite direction do not have to stop for the bus (painted lines or pavement markings are not considered barriers). However, these motorists should slow down and watch for students loading or unloading from the bus. #yourfirmyourfamily #staysafe #backtoschool #personalinjurylawer #personalinjuryfirm #personalinjuryattorney
