As part of Cultural Diversity Week, we spoke to Sector Development Officer, Carissa, to share her advice on how you can make your own workplace culturally safe and responsive. Held every year on 21st May, UNESCO leads the celebration of World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development, highlighting not only the richness of the world’s cultures, but also the essential role of intercultural dialogue for achieving peace and sustainable development. Celebrating cultural diversity day can help promote understanding and respect for different cultures, traditions, and beliefs. It can help increase awareness of diversity, which means having a range of people with various racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, and cultural backgrounds and various lifestyles, experience, and interests being represented in the department. The 2024 theme for the day is: Integrate culture in sustainable development frameworks, which becomes an ideal opportunity to remind employers of the duty to ensure their Equal Opportunities and Diversity and Inclusion Policies are current, in line with legislative requirements and made available to all employees. Organisations have the power to disrupt the systems that have entrenched inequalities and more importantly to share the value of multiple cultures. 💡Does your Inclusion and Well-being strategy promote an understanding of the differences between cultural assimilation, cultural acculturation and cultural appreciation?
